What settings should I use for water\u00adfall photography?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e1fc243 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e1fc243\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In my opinion, you have three options:&nbsp;<\/p><ul><li>short expo\u00adsure times (approx. &lt; 1\/200 s) to make the force of the water visible,<\/li><li>medium expo\u00adsure times (between 0.1 and 1 second) to preserve the texture of the water while crea\u00adting an artistic effect,<\/li><li>long expo\u00adsure times (&gt;5 seconds) for a smoother effect and water that appears silky and smooth.<\/li><\/ul><p>Whatever you choose is your decision and your form of photo\u00adgra\u00adphic expres\u00adsion. Still, I\u2019d like to share a few reasons with you for why I choose certain shutter speeds.&nbsp;<\/p><h4>Short expo\u00adsure&nbsp;times<\/h4><p>When photo\u00adgra\u00adphing large, maje\u00adstic water\u00adfalls (such as Sk\u00f3ga\u00adfoss in Iceland or M\u00fala\u00adfo\u00adssur in the Faroe Islands), a short expo\u00adsure time can help capture the power of the water as it plunges down such a massive cascade. This is espe\u00adci\u00adally effec\u00adtive when paired with a second element (a person, a bird, etc.) that further high\u00adlights the scale and size of the waterfall.<\/p><h4>Medium expo\u00adsure&nbsp;times<\/h4><p>A medium expo\u00adsure time\u2014usually between 0.1 s and 1 s\u2014is what I aim for most often when photo\u00adgra\u00adphing water\u00adfalls, espe\u00adci\u00adally the medium-sized ones in the Black Forest. For my taste, this is the sweet spot between smooth water and still-visible texture. The exact expo\u00adsure time depends a bit on the distance to the water\u00adfall and the focal length I\u2019ve chosen. If I\u2019m closer to the water\u00adfall or zooming in further, I might use a slightly longer expo\u00adsure; if I\u2019m farther away or shoo\u00adting with a wider angle, I might use a slightly shorter one. This is because when the water\u00adfall appears \u201csmaller\u201d in the photo, the water needs more time to travel a greater distance (i.e., the number of pixels on the sensor). If we\u2019re closer, even a distance of just a few centi\u00adme\u00adters traveled by the water can mean it covers more than half the sensor in pixels.&nbsp;<\/p><h4>Long expo\u00adsure&nbsp;times<\/h4><p>I rarely use extre\u00admely long expo\u00adsure times\u2014such as over 5 seconds\u2014but I know there are many photo\u00adgraphers who love that silky-smooth, artis\u00adti\u00adcally rendered look of water. This effect simpli\u00adfies an image, makes it appear calmer, and is ther\u00ade\u00adfore also suitable for more mini\u00adma\u00adlist, clearly struc\u00adtured water\u00adfall photos. For these long expo\u00adsure times, use a neutral density filter if neces\u00adsary and set the ISO as low as possible.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Other\u00adwise, in water\u00adfall photo\u00adgraphy, ISO and aper\u00adture are just means to an end for me\u2014they\u2019re simply tools I use to achieve the desired shutter speed. If I need ISO 400, I use it. What filters are neces\u00adsary for water\u00adfall photography?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b8c66b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b8c66b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Water\u00adfall photo\u00adgraphy can get pretty wet. Rocks, dead\u00adwood, water, plants\u2014all of these reflect the bright light coming from above, causing you to lose contrast and color very quickly. That\u2019s why, in most cases, a <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49UOYWE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">circular pola\u00adri\u00adzing filter (*)<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;is essen\u00adtial for water\u00adfall photo\u00adgraphy. This removes the stray light from reflec\u00adtive surfaces, allo\u00adwing you to restore the true colors of the subject. You can see the effect imme\u00addia\u00adtely in your camera\u2019s Live View and, if needed, adjust the amount of reflec\u00adtion to your liking.<\/p><p>For long expo\u00adsure times, you\u2019ll also need an ND filter. This gene\u00adrally reduces the amount of light ente\u00adring your camera, allo\u00adwing for a longer expo\u00adsure time. If you\u2019re serious about water\u00adfall photo\u00adgraphy, I recom\u00admend getting a <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49UOYWE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-quality filter set<\/a> (*) <\/span>consis\u00adting of 2\u20133 neutral density filters and a circular pola\u00adri\u00adzing filter. First, they\u2019ll last you a long time; second, high-quality filters don\u2019t distort color repro\u00adduc\u00adtion but preserve accu\u00adrate colors, even in dense gray condi\u00adtions. When purcha\u00adsing, make sure to buy the filter size that fits your largest lens, and for smaller lenses, use more affordable <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4xqkxS8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">step-up rings<\/a> (*)<\/span>&nbsp;to work&nbsp;with.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Addi\u00adtional filters, such as dust filters or similar, are not neces\u00adsary. You can easily recreate these effects in Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom, Photo\u00adshop, or Luminar Neo with just a few clicks. In my opinion, that\u2019s money you could put to better use elsewhere.<\/p><p>Other important gadgets for water\u00adfall photo\u00adgraphy are <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4eisctg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tripod (*)<\/a><\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/443PA8Z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">micro\u00adfiber wipes (*)<\/span><\/a> and maybe a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4eCr84y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">rain coverfor This ensures even lighting across the scene, avoi\u00adding harsh high\u00adlights or deep shadows.
