Some images look like perfect snapshots, others almost like pain\u00adtings. What is the diffe\u00adrence? And is too perfect simply fake? In today\u2019s post, I\u2019ll explain what the addi\u00adtion of \u2018fine art\u2019 means, how you can reco\u00adg\u00adnise fine art photo\u00adgraphy and how it differs from normal land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy! Ever seen a land\u00adscape photo and thought: Wow, I abso\u00adlutely have to go there! \u2013 and then you got there and thought: Hang on a minute\u2026 it looks comple\u00adtely diffe\u00adrent, why does ever\u00ady\u00adthing seem so flat or so normal? Where are those epic colours and the magical light?<\/p>

Well, that may be because you have seen a picture by a photo\u00adgra\u00adphic artist who is not concerned with docu\u00admen\u00adting a land\u00adscape or accu\u00adra\u00adtely repro\u00addu\u00adcing reality in his pictures. Instead, he is concerned with art, or perhaps with crea\u00adting a perfect moment, or even just an emotion.<\/p>

Well, that\u2019s exactly what today\u2019s post is about: What distin\u00adgu\u00adishes normal land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy from fine art land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy? And is fine art ulti\u00adm\u00adately just fake? I\u2019m curious to hear your opinions and views. What\u2019s stan\u00addard land\u00adscape photography<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u2018Stan\u00addard\u2019 land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy, or land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy that serves more as docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion, captures nature as it is. The goal is to create a reali\u00adstic repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion. Colours, lighting and compo\u00adsi\u00adtion should appear natural and are best planned in advance or incor\u00adpo\u00adrated spon\u00adta\u00adneously. This makes it perfect for travel photo\u00adgraphy, docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adries, maga\u00adzines and even adver\u00adti\u00adsing brochures, for example for the tourism industry in a parti\u00adcular loca\u00adtion. In this form of land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy, editing is rather subtle \u2013 small adjus\u00adt\u00adments such as expo\u00adsure, contrast or white balance \u2013 some\u00adtimes that\u2019s all it takes. Minor distrac\u00adting elements may also be stamped out or given a little more depth with Dodge & Burn. But colours are left as natural as possible.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What\u2019s fine art land\u00adscape photography?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Fine art land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy is not about sober docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion, but rather an artistic inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion of the land\u00adscape. The artistic vision of the land\u00adscape or place in nature is the focus here. The goal is not to photo\u00adgraph the land\u00adscape reali\u00adsti\u00adcally, i.e. as it actually looked, but rather how the photo\u00adgrapher felt and expe\u00adri\u00adenced it. For the artist, the emotion or a certain mood in the image is para\u00admount. It is more about crea\u00adting art for galle\u00adries or wall art for coll\u00adec\u00adtors, or even for the artist\u2019s own port\u00adfolio or a picture book. For this type of photo\u00adgraphy, extreme shoo\u00adting angles or focal lengths are used at the loca\u00adtion to exag\u00adge\u00adrate propor\u00adtions, for example. Colours may also be drama\u00adti\u00adcally altered in some way, lighting moods signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly enhanced, or entire image elements removed or added. Post-proces\u00adsing is a crucial part of the crea\u00adtive process. Anything that empha\u00adsises the photographer\u2019s vision is permitted. It is more about photo art than photo documentation.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Diffe\u00adrences in captu\u00adring technology<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The diffe\u00adrences can some\u00adtimes be seen during the captu\u00adring process.
In classic land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy, the process is simple: plan for the weather, light and subject, find the loca\u00adtion at the right time, choose the focal length and perspec\u00adtive, set up the tripod, compose the image neatly, possibly use a classic tech\u00adnique such as a graduated filter, then wait for the natural light to fall \u2013 and take the photo at the best moment \u2013 done. The aim is to get the perfect image straight from the camera, requi\u00adring as little editing as possible. Even though images can some\u00adtimes be created spontaneously.<\/p>

The process described above is basi\u00adcally the same in fine art photo\u00adgraphy, albeit more expe\u00adri\u00admental. ND filters are often used for long expo\u00adsures, unusual perspec\u00adtives or extreme focal lengths are used to create an \u2018aha\u2019 or \u2018wow\u2019 effect, or to make small things appear large. Alter\u00adna\u00adtively, deli\u00adbera\u00adtely over\u00adex\u00adposed or under\u00adex\u00adposed images can be used. Some\u00adtimes, diffe\u00adrent shots such as long and short expo\u00adsures are combined or time blen\u00adding is used. In most cases, the photo\u00adgrapher already has the subse\u00adquent image editing in mind while taking the photos and acts accor\u00addingly on site.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The big diffe\u00adrence: image editing<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The diffe\u00adrence between normal and fine art land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy becomes really clear in image editing.
As already mentioned, normal land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy involves minor correc\u00adtions: white balance, contrast, perhaps a little sharp\u00adness. These are all things that can be easily edited in Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom. And even if selec\u00adtive adjus\u00adt\u00adments are used in addi\u00adtion to global settings, the reali\u00adstic repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion is usually preserved.<\/p>

In fine art photo\u00adgraphy, Photo\u00adshop or Luminar Neo are used along\u00adside Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom and have become important crea\u00adtive tools: in addi\u00adtion to more or less dramatic colour changes, arti\u00adfi\u00adcial lighting effects can also be created. Some\u00adtimes the sky is replaced, whether through time blen\u00adding, incor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adting a long expo\u00adsure shot taken on loca\u00adtion, or even complete compo\u00adsites. Images taken with diffe\u00adrent focal lengths may be combined, or distor\u00adtions may be used in Photo\u00adshop, and much more. The result is no longer a pure repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion of the land\u00adscape, but an artistic vision. Much of it may be heavily darkened to draw the viewer\u2019s eye to exactly the element in the image that the photo artist wants. Atmo\u00adspheric elements are added, and so on. There are hardly any limits. And the boun\u00adda\u00adries between photo\u00adgraphy and digital art are also blurring.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

But wait a minute \u2013 doesn\u2019t that mean fine art photo\u00adgraphy is just fake? Aren\u2019t we decei\u00adving our audi\u00adence, i.e. the viewers of our pictures? Aren\u2019t we preten\u00adding that a reality exists that doesn\u2019t actually exist?<\/p>

The answer is no.<\/p>

I know that many people expect a photo\u00adgraph to show reality. This is abso\u00adlutely essen\u00adtial, espe\u00adci\u00adally in repor\u00adtage photo\u00adgraphy. In land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy, it depends on how the images are used.<\/p>

Fine art photo\u00adgraphy is not decep\u00adtion, as long as it is clear that it is an artistic inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion, a realised photo\u00adgra\u00adphic vision. Let\u2019s take a painter as an example. He does not paint his land\u00adscape exactly as it looks in reality, but as he feels it. Similar to a fine art artist, he adds lighting effects, animals or celes\u00adtial bodies to his pain\u00adting and leaves out the road, the sign or the park bench with the rubbish bin. He is inspired by the land\u00adscape and creates his own inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion or vision with his pain\u00adting. This is exactly what fine art photo\u00adgraphers do. Instead of a brush and canvas, they use their camera and image editing to realise their vision. It is not about docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion, but about emotions, mood and artistic expres\u00adsion. It is art.<\/p>

Inci\u00adden\u00adtally, even selec\u00adting a focal length and choo\u00adsing a section of a photo\u00adgraph is a kind of decep\u00adtion. By deli\u00adbera\u00adtely omit\u00adting elements of the land\u00adscape, simply by not inclu\u00adding them in the picture, or not being able to include them, a diffe\u00adrent effect of reality is created for the viewer. From this perspec\u00adtive, even a black-and-white image is a decep\u00adtion. The world is in colour. Redu\u00adcing it to black and white reduces distrac\u00adtion through colour and allows the viewer to expe\u00adri\u00adence a comple\u00adtely diffe\u00adrent effect through shapes or contrast. Seen in this light, every image actually pres\u00adents a diffe\u00adrent reality than the true reality. Viewers, photo\u00adgraphers and photo artists alike should be aware of this. That\u2019s why it was important to me to make this video. I think the key lies in honesty. Those who create fine art can and should name it as such and make it clear that it is an artistic interpretation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In summary, it can be said that normal land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy tends to show reality, docu\u00admen\u00adting the state of our world at a parti\u00adcular point in time. Fine art land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy visua\u00adlises the vision of a photo\u00adgra\u00adphic artist and attempts to evoke more emotion in the viewer. Both have their place \u2013 they just have diffe\u00adrent goals. While normal land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy is perfect for maga\u00adzines, personal photo books or similar, fine art land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy is more specia\u00adlised, intended for galle\u00adries, port\u00adfo\u00adlios or illus\u00adtrated books. This is also because the editing process takes so much more time.<\/p>

I think both have their place. I don\u2019t consider fine art photo\u00adgraphy to be fake either. It should just be labelled as such and not deceive viewers by telling them a fairy tale that never happened.<\/p>

Perso\u00adnally, as a photo\u00adgrapher, I see myself some\u00adwhere in between and would not assign myself to one parti\u00adcular area. My pictures go beyond mere docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion, but I still try to incor\u00adpo\u00adrate as much as neces\u00adsary and as little image editing as possible. However, if it bene\u00adfits my vision, my target photo, then I may do a little more.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
