In recent years, Adobe has perfected selec\u00adtive masks in Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom. The possi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties are enormous and diverse. But it hasn\u2019t neces\u00ads\u00ada\u00adrily become any easier. In this BLOG\/VLOG, I provide an insight into editing with selec\u00adtive masks. Global vs. selec\u00adtive adjustments<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Anyone editing a RAW photo with Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom for the first time will be surprised at how much contrast, colour and detail they can get out of their images. Simply go through the sliders from top to bottom and see what happens, to put it bluntly. If it gets better, great; if not, reset it. Once you\u2019re done, you\u2019ll already be thin\u00adking, \u2018Wow!\u2019 <\/p>

But if you leave it at that, you\u2019re leaving a lot of your photos\u2019 poten\u00adtial untapped. Because the actual image editing begins with the mask tool in Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom<\/span>(*)<\/a>, or other soft\u00adware, such as Luminar Neo<\/span>(*)<\/a> really gets going. <\/p>

The simple mask tools certainly include the radial gradient filter, the linear gradient filter and the brush tool. For some time now, however, it has also been possible to mask by colour ranges and lumi\u00adnance ranges, i.e. bright\u00adness ranges. Addi\u00adtional AI-supported masks have been added, such as sky, land\u00adscape and person selec\u00adtion, etc.<\/p>

The right strength is then deve\u00adloped by skilfully combi\u00adning these masks. Subtrac\u00adting a linear gradient from the sky can imitate an ND gradient filter, which outshines any analogue ND gradient filter, as the latter would unfa\u00advour\u00adably darken distinc\u00adtive elements in the land\u00adscape. Alter\u00adna\u00adtively, the inter\u00adsec\u00adtion between bright areas of the image and the brush tool is a perfect dodge and burn tool.<\/p>

The possi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties are endless, so it\u2019s important to explore them. In the video below, you can see a few ways to combine masks. You can also see how big the diffe\u00adrence between purely global and global with selec\u00adtive adjus\u00adt\u00adments can be.
