My tripod, camera and filters are set up in no time, and the sunset is already looking really great at sunset. Now I just have to wait until it really kicks in. What is time blending?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Now, don\u2019t change anything about the compo\u00adsi\u00adtion of the image. It\u2019s best to leave ever\u00ady\u00adthing as it is and continue taking pictures. Just don\u2019t be tempted. We already have a shot of the perfect sky for this picture, so we need another one when the city lights are on and the atmo\u00adsphere of the place is right too.<\/p>

In such cases, a second camera is really helpful, as it means you are not tempted to change anything in the main image, but still have the option of captu\u00adring other things around you. <\/p>

About 20 minutes later, I had a nice shot of the houses with the street lights on. It should be possible to blend this in, right? Sure! It\u2019s actually an easy exer\u00adcise in Photo\u00adshop if you\u2019ve taken ever\u00ady\u00adthing into account on site. This tech\u00adnique even has a name: time blen\u00adding. And unlike sky repla\u00adce\u00adment, which has been on everyone\u2019s lips for some time now, time blen\u00adding is even an approved tech\u00adnique in many popular photo competitions. <\/p>

You take a photo in one place, but capture indi\u00advi\u00addual elements at diffe\u00adrent times. This tech\u00adnique is parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly popular for land\u00adscape shots by the sea. In the fore\u00adground, you capture the beau\u00adtiful move\u00adment of the water, in the middle ground a perfectly brea\u00adking wave, and in the back\u00adground a stun\u00adning sky with birds flying by. Ever\u00ady\u00adthing is combined using the time-blen\u00adding method to create a perfect photo\u00adgra\u00adphic moment. Waiting for such a moment would take years, and due to the diffe\u00adrent expo\u00adsure times required, it might not even be possible to capture it in a single image. <\/p>

With tech\u00adni\u00adques like these, you natu\u00adrally move away from simply taking pictures and towards fine art photo\u00adgraphy. A more artistic approach to photo\u00adgraphy, where the aim is not to depict reality, but to evoke an emotion. It\u2019s about art. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Either you plan to take this kind of shot from the outset, in which case you know what you have to do, or it just happens. At the seaside, you take dozens of shots from one posi\u00adtion to capture the move\u00adment of the water. Many of the pictures end up in the bin, but two, three, four, five or more may have a great element that can be combined to create a fanta\u00adstic image. <\/p>

I\u2019ll be honest: in my case, it was obser\u00adving the sky and my lucky personal intui\u00adtion that the sunset would probably not get any stronger. So I tried to keep my fingers off the zoom ring and tripod screws so that, in the \u2018worst\u2019 case scenario, I could do some time blen\u00adding. It paid off thanks to a bit of luck, but also to my experience. <\/p>

Of course, you can fix a lot in Photo\u00adshop, but ideally you should posi\u00adtion the camera and then not change anything else. Remo\u00adving a filter when it gets darker is still possible. Adjus\u00adting the aper\u00adture, chan\u00adging the ISO \u2013 all of that is possible, of course. But it\u2019s better to wait a minute longer before taking the last shot and not move on too soon. <\/p>

In some villages and towns, buil\u00addings can benefit from the last reflected light of the sun shortly after sunset. A red sunset may not appear until minutes later. Street lighting usually comes on even later. You can combine all of this, and it is still 100% your work and does not consist of 30% of another photographer\u2019s sky.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The nice thing about crea\u00adting time-blen\u00adding shots is that you have plenty of time to chat. That\u2019s how I got to know a nice photo\u00adgrapher from Leiden, who gave me a few tips for motifs for the evening. So I decided to go on a photo walk in Leiden during the blue hour and into the night. And what can I say, it was worth the effort. I took some really great pictures that evening. <\/p>

Many other Dutch people joined us throug\u00adhout the evening and took photos with their mobile phones along\u00adside me. Almost ever\u00adyone spoke to me. And ever\u00adyone was thrilled that I was pursuing my hobby here and taking such great photos, which already looked fanta\u00adstic on the camera display. <\/p>

A lot of time went into a shot at Galge\u00adwater in Leiden. A time blend that shows the loca\u00adtion over a period of perhaps as much as 30 minutes. I had signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly less time for the other pictures, but I still managed to take some beau\u00adtiful shots in Leiden in the Nether\u00adlands. How could it be other\u00adwise in such a beau\u00adtiful place?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
