Why wind\u00admills?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

They are abso\u00adlutely typical of the Nether\u00adlands and scat\u00adtered throug\u00adhout the country: wind\u00admills. Their main task, histo\u00adri\u00adcally, was to drain land to make it usable for agri\u00adcul\u00adture.  <\/span>However, they were also used for various other purposes, such as grin\u00adding grain, sawing wood or pres\u00adsing oil. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

The Nether\u00adlands, a country with a lot of water, parts of which even lie below sea level, used wind\u00admills to drain low-lying areas (polders) and thus prevent floo\u00adding and gain land for agri\u00adcul\u00adture. Wind\u00admills thus became a symbol of the Nether\u00adlands. They are closely linked to its history and culture.  T<\/span><\/span>oday, they are often tourist attrac\u00adtions that can be visited and where you can gain an insight into tradi\u00adtional Dutch life. <\/span><\/p>

But they also symbo\u00adlise the Nether\u00adlands\u2019 struggle against water and its ability to deal with the chal\u00adlenges of water manage\u00adment. Today, many wind\u00admills are no longer in opera\u00adtion, but they are often restored and main\u00adtained to preserve them as histo\u00adrical monu\u00adments and show\u00adcase the rich history of the Nether\u00adlands. From a photo\u00adgra\u00adphic point of view, they are ther\u00ade\u00adfore always a great subject in the flat land\u00adscape of the Nether\u00adlands, and they always have a story to tell.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Where are the windmills?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

To find wind\u00admills in the Nether\u00adlands as a photo\u00adgrapher and plan to photo\u00adgraph them, you can buy so-called loca\u00adtion maps from many local photo\u00adgraphers. These maps provide some infor\u00adma\u00adtion and the loca\u00adtions of the wind\u00admills. However, if you want to save your euros for dinner with your wife (or some\u00adthing else), you will find specific infor\u00adma\u00adtion about wind\u00admills on www.molendatabase.nl<\/span><\/a> f\u00fcndig.<\/p>

There you will find all the wind\u00admills in the Nether\u00adlands, in most cases with pictures and their loca\u00adtions. With a quick look at Google Maps, you can use your imagi\u00adna\u00adtion to gene\u00adrate image ideas and find possible times of year\/day for each mill and see when it is worth visi\u00adting. You can also find the nearest parking spaces, so there should be nothing stan\u00adding in the way of navi\u00adga\u00adting to the spot. <\/p>

It is some\u00adwhat more diffi\u00adcult to deter\u00admine how acces\u00adsible the wind\u00admills are. Some are located on private land. It is not always possible to walk comple\u00adtely around them because water, fences or farm\u00adland block the way. However, Google Maps or Earth may provide suffi\u00adcient images to esti\u00admate where you can stand in rela\u00adtion to the mills. However, there will always be a little uncer\u00adtainty. In this case, as in mine, it helps to have a drone and be able to fly it briefly. This allowed me to get all three wind\u00admills in one picture, even though a fence and private property blocked the way to my desired composition. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

How to photo\u00adgraph windmills?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Back to the evening of the event. The three wind\u00admills are lined up in a straight row along a canal. My initial inten\u00adtion was to photo\u00adgraph the wind\u00admills, which faced the setting sun, at a wide angle with the setting sun on the left and the three wind\u00admills on the right of the image. The nearest wind\u00admill would have created a visual balance to the sun on the left of the image. To do this, I had scouted the path behind the last wind\u00admill on Google Maps and hoped that I would be allowed to use it to get to the ideal posi\u00adtion. (Similar to the first drone image at the bottom of the gallery)<\/p>

But the path was blocked off. So I had to make the best of it. From my possible loca\u00adtion, I could only get 2 of the 3 wind\u00admills in the picture. To give the image as much balance as possible, I posi\u00adtioned the domi\u00adnant wind\u00admill as close to the centre as possible. Even though the compo\u00adsi\u00adtion and lighting worked quite well in the photo\u00adgraph, I still feel that the visual weight tilts slightly to the left. But not so much that it\u2019s too distrac\u00adting. With the drone (above) and the three mills, it was easier to find a good balance, as the posi\u00adtio\u00adning of the drone (*)<\/span><\/a> is, of course, much easier. <\/p>

To make sure I didn\u2019t miss any lighting situa\u00adtions in the dynamic weather, I decided to start with a time-lapse right away. While my camera was taking pictures non-stop, I was able to fly the drone at my leisure and do a little vlog\u00adging. I even had the intui\u00adtion to opti\u00admise the image compo\u00adsi\u00adtion again briefly for one picture when the light was at its best. Oh yes, I almost forgot. I had already noticed before\u00adhand that the moon should actually rise in the perfect direc\u00adtion. But with all the beau\u00adtiful light and the need to act quickly to take photos in the warm light of the golden hour, I had comple\u00adtely forgotten about it. As I was setting up the tripod, it suddenly came back to me. \u2018Wait a minute, there was some\u00adthing else!\u2019<\/p>

I took out my 100\u2013400 mm (*)<\/a><\/span> from my back\u00adpack<\/a> <\/span>and changed the lens. Then it appeared. The clouds cleared just in time. It wasn\u2019t quite a perfect full moon, but it suited the atmo\u00adsphere of the blue hour and the wind\u00admills excep\u00adtio\u00adnally well. So I spent another half hour taking some pictures before getting back in the car and driving through the night back to our accommodation.<\/p>

I am pleased with this very successful evening for my photography.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Despite all the plan\u00adning, there is always a little uncer\u00adtainty. The evening at the wind\u00admills did not go exactly as I had planned. But I still managed to take some beau\u00adtiful pictures in the lovely evening light.
