Time that we some\u00adtimes don\u2019t have<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I can preach it so often in my vlogs and blogs, but if I don\u2019t even manage it myself, what is my word worth? I\u2019m talking about taking\/planning enough time. Some\u00adthing I\u2019ve found a little more diffi\u00adcult since the birth of our second child.<\/p>

Land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy is not some\u00adthing you do on the run, as if you were passing by. You plan, weigh up, scout, visit places in advance, assess loca\u00adtions in terms of lighting and weather condi\u00adtions and thus get an idea of the finished work. It\u2019s not unusual to come home with diffe\u00adrent results than you had imagined. Some\u00adtimes the pictures you take deviate more or less from the target photo in your head. This is not tragic and is probably the case for most land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphers. The important thing is to set off with a certain inten\u00adtion. Plans can always change. And despite all the tech\u00adno\u00adlogy, apps and pre-plan\u00adning, you still need a healthy intui\u00adtion in the field. Some\u00adtimes also a certain ability to impro\u00advise and make quick decisions. <\/p>

The latter points become parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly important when we unde\u00adre\u00adsti\u00admate the aspect of time and have too little of it. Espe\u00adci\u00adally at a sunset spot like this one on the coast of the Nether\u00adlands, there should actually be enough time to get there on time. And espe\u00adci\u00adally in summer, when the sun doesn\u2019t set until 10 p.m. or later. But today, of all days, our children just didn\u2019t want to go to sleep. It\u2019s bad enough that I some\u00adtimes leave my wife alone on evenings like this to pursue my hobby, but leaving her alone with two whin\u00adging children who don\u2019t want to sleep? No, I\u2019m not doing that. <\/p>

By the time the children were finally asleep, it was already after 9pm. I knew it would take a few minutes by car and a good 20-minute walk, so off we went. What else did I know in advance from my online scou\u00adting? Hilly, a lake, dunes with a heath-like land\u00adscape, possibly a view of the sea, even a few trees, so\u2026 there must be some\u00adthing to be found. Once we arrived at point A, a lake, it wasn\u2019t too long until sunset. Should I go on to point B, a view\u00adpoint on the dunes? Or stay here? <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Crea\u00adting the final photo<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I walked on. It shouldn\u2019t be too far now and as long as I have direct light from the sun, grazing light will sculpt the dune land\u00adscapes. This gives pictures depth and a better three-dimen\u00adsional look. When the sun has gone, it will probably be time to go back to the lake for the sunset.<\/p>

I had to make quick decis\u00adions and quickly grasp poten\u00adtial motifs and image compo\u00adsi\u00adtions. Some\u00adthing that often doesn\u2019t lead to the best results. But when time is short, it helps to concen\u00adtrate and try not to make any mistakes. Picture in the direc\u00adtion of the sun? Bracke\u00adting shots! For all cases! Very close to the fore\u00adground? Quickly take 3\u20135 shots for focus stacking! Do I really need them? Maybe not, but if I do, then I have them. <\/p>

I move from one image compo\u00adsi\u00adtion to the next. Not in order to have as many images as possible to flood social media with, no, to feel my way towards an optimal result image by image. Some\u00adtimes you go too far, then you go back a bit. Wider angle? Yes! Closer! Even more! Hm\u2026 no, not at all. Back a little again. Camera a little higher or lower? Back a little. Zoom in. Now it fits! Press the shutter release again and again in between. I recorded this process in the vlog so that you can see that some\u00adtimes it\u2019s really hard work to achieve the desired result. The inter\u00adme\u00addiate results are often not bad and some\u00adtimes it\u2019s just the details that stop me from seeing them as portfolio-ready. <\/p>

This results in 200\u2013300 pictures in one hour. At the end of the day, 20\u201330 are finished. Also because many are very similar. Some make it into the online gallery and onto Insta\u00adgram. Maybe a handful will make it into the port\u00adfolio or at least into a photo book or illus\u00adtrated book? Maybe a picture will even make it onto the wall \u2014 mine or that of a customer. That\u2019s just the way it is. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What happened next? The plan certainly worked out and after the sun had disap\u00adpeared, the sunset over the lake lasted for at least a few shots and diffe\u00adrent perspec\u00adtives. However, there was a slight lack of \u2018oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties\u2019. The lake itself was surrounded by herbaceous bushes, which didn\u2019t provide too much for the fore\u00adground. Nevert\u00adheless, I used it for the fore\u00adground, but in such a way that it wasn\u2019t obtru\u00adsive. The shots by the lake are charac\u00adte\u00adrised above all by the reflec\u00adtion of the sky and the silhou\u00adette of the vege\u00adta\u00adtion. The effect is created by the colours of the sky. <\/p>

If there had been more time, I might have found a better job. However, the options and the chances of success were really slim. I managed to get an inte\u00adres\u00adting perspec\u00adtive on a dead piece of wood and I was also able to take a few nice pictures of the inte\u00adres\u00adting trees in the imme\u00addiate vicinity. <\/p>

In the end, I was able to get quite a lot out of it under time pres\u00adsure, I think. If you\u2019re strugg\u00adling a bit in situa\u00adtions like this, there are three main things that help: Prac\u00adtice, prac\u00adtice, practice. <\/p>

In photo\u00adgraphy, the more you photo\u00adgraph and the better you ques\u00adtion yourself, the better you become. So stay inspired and don\u2019t forget your camera when you go out!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Today will perhaps be less educa\u00adtional, but all the more about photo\u00adgraphy and disco\u00advery. I had scouted this loca\u00adtion online as best I could before\u00adhand, but didn\u2019t discover too many pictures or infor\u00adma\u00adtion. As good condi\u00adtions mate\u00adria\u00adlised faster than I had expected, I didn\u2019t have time to plan ever\u00ady\u00adthing in advance. Once again, intui\u00adtion and impro\u00advi\u00adsa\u00adtion were required.
