Skylum? Luminar? Wasn\u2019t that the program with the fake skies? Exactly, and with just one click! But not only that. It was the first image editing program that offered the editor quite a lot of calcu\u00adla\u00adtions and adjus\u00adt\u00adments more or less supported by AI. For some time now, the place\u00adment of a sun and sunbeams, which also look damn reali\u00adstic, has also been quite impres\u00adsive. And that too with more or less just one click. But it\u2019s not just these func\u00adtions in Luminar that always make you feel a bit bad \u2014 at least that\u2019s how I feel, because it somehow smells of \u201cfake\u201d. You can also adjust all the \u201cnormal things\u201d such as expo\u00adsure, highs, lows, whites and blacks. <\/p>

But the people at Skylum go their own way and remain true to them\u00adselves. So there is not the normal contrast, struc\u00adture and clarity in the edit area, no, it is called smart contrast, because almost white parts of the image are not brigh\u00adtened any further, and small\/medium\/large details, because the program reco\u00adgnizes whether it should work out fine struc\u00adtures, medium or coarse ones and auto\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcally runs the right filters in the back\u00adground. Nothing that you couldn\u2019t do with Photo\u00adshop, but the know-how that you have to display in such a case is equi\u00adva\u00adlent to the know\u00adledge of a profes\u00adsional image editor.<\/p>

Admit\u00adtedly, if you come from the world of Photo\u00adshop and Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom, you first have to find your way around Luminar a little. What does a slider called Twilight Enhancer(AI) do? Or Relight (AI) and Atmosphere(AI)? Some of the names give a rough idea of the func\u00adtions behind them. But if you move the slider once, it usually becomes clear very quickly. Small info \u201ci \u201ds also help. In such func\u00adtions, the program usually changes not just one small specific thing, but several things at the same time. If you are new to Luminar, this can mess up one or two things that you have previously set, but after a little trai\u00adning, the program deli\u00advers fanta\u00adstic results with just a few clicks. <\/p>

An example: How do I create depth in an image? In Photo\u00adshop or Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom, I work with selec\u00adtive masks, I need to know that I have to darken the fore\u00adground a little, perhaps add a little more contrast and struc\u00adture or sharp\u00adness, lighten more distant elements in another mask, reduce contrasts, perhaps use a little nega\u00adtive dehaze. I may have to mask out subjects, which can now be done quickly thanks to object reco\u00adgni\u00adtion, but you have to think about it and use it that way. In Luminar, I have to set the Bright\u00adness Near and Bright\u00adness Far in Relight(AI) and the desired depth in Depth. As if by magic, Luminar Neo leaves out what should be left out. Who is sitting in the program and thin\u00adking? Amazing. <\/p>

Of course, with such AI-supported func\u00adtions, there are some\u00adtimes images where it works better and some\u00adtimes where it works less well. In the mean\u00adtime, however, Luminar has also improved signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly in the area of masking, so that you can still do it yourself if it didn\u2019t work perfectly in one place or another. In any case, changes can always be applied globally or locally.<\/p>

Also, Luminar writes all changes as a kind of log (or are they layers like in Photo\u00adshop? I don\u2019t know what it is yet. Maybe a bit of both?) In any case, you can adjust ever\u00ady\u00adthing non-destruc\u00adtively after\u00adwards. In my opinion, this also makes it a fully-fledged soft\u00adware for image editing.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Now to the ques\u00adtion: How fast has Luminar become?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

You\u2019re probably wonde\u00adring: AI func\u00adtions like this must take up a lot of compu\u00adting power and time, right? That was my first thought too, but I was really amazed at how effi\u00adci\u00adently ever\u00ady\u00adthing works. Changes to the sliders are quickly visible. Some\u00adtimes the image changes to a kind of preview in reduced reso\u00adlu\u00adtion, but you can still see what the effects are. Sure, some func\u00adtions are calcu\u00adlated and it takes a second, but with further adjus\u00adt\u00adments there is usually no waiting time. <\/p>\n

If you know your way around the func\u00adtions (and I don\u2019t know all of them yet), you can create a great edit in no time with the right controls. I edited the image below in 6 minutes (see video) and got the result I wanted with just a few func\u00adtions. I also replaced the sky and played around a bit. Sorry, I just had to do it. The sky before was a yawning empty blue, please don\u2019t hold that against me! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n
