Effect of the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

To under\u00adstand how the circular pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter works, it helps to take a closer look at the physics of light. Without getting too theo\u00adre\u00adtical, simply put: light particles fly from the light source, hit an object and are reflected by it and hit the eye or the camera\u2019s photo sensor. Depen\u00adding on how much or which light particles are reflected, objects appear brighter or darker and of course with their specific colour. The light particles do not fly out in a constant straight line, but oscil\u00adlate in waves. This oscil\u00adla\u00adtion is not always in the same direc\u00adtion, but goes up and down for one particle and perhaps slightly right and left for another \u2014 in all directions. <\/p>

Reflec\u00adtions on surfaces such as water, metal, glass or even foliage pola\u00adrise light, i.e. it now oscil\u00adlates more strongly in one direc\u00adtion. These reflec\u00adtions can cause colours to appear paler. With the circular pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter, I can now block light that oscil\u00adlates in a certain direc\u00adtion that doesn\u2019t suit me. This means that I only allow one direc\u00adtion of oscil\u00adla\u00adtion. By turning the pola\u00adri\u00adsa\u00adtion direc\u00adtion correctly, I can reduce reflec\u00adtions in nature and land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy, opti\u00admise colours and increase contrasts.<\/p>

In the forest, the stronger green that you can get with the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter clearly shows how this filter makes the colours stronger. In the blue of a sky with white clouds, you can best reco\u00adg\u00adnise the increased contrast created by the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter. By incre\u00adasing such contrasts, the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter is also a good aid in black and white photo\u00adgraphy. Unwanted reflec\u00adtions in shop windows can also be filtered out or even the reflec\u00adtions of a lake, should these be unin\u00adten\u00adtional, can be mini\u00admised. In portrait photo\u00adgraphy, it helps to remove reflec\u00adtions from spec\u00adtacle lenses. The areas of appli\u00adca\u00adtion are ther\u00ade\u00adfore varied and extensive. <\/p>

But the strength of the effect also varies. Firstly, it depends on how much you \u2018turn it in\u2019 and secondly, on the direc\u00adtion of the light in rela\u00adtion to the direc\u00adtion of the shot. The effect is stron\u00adgest, for example, when the sun is 90\u00b0 from your left or right. In back\u00adlighting, the effect is reduced and the addi\u00adtional glass between the sensor and the light source can even lead to problems. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As I show in the video (below), even in direct back\u00adlighting the effect of the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter on the leaves of the wild garlic is not insi\u00adgni\u00adfi\u00adcant. But you bring other problems into the picture. When using filters, you should gene\u00adrally be aware that you are intro\u00addu\u00adcing an addi\u00adtional layer of glass between the subject\/light source and the camera sensor\/lens. One more layer in which light can refract, thereby redu\u00adcing sharp\u00adness, chan\u00adging colours, weak\u00ade\u00adning contrasts, reflec\u00adting light or crea\u00adting chro\u00admatic aberra\u00adtions. So either take both shots on loca\u00adtion, or check very carefully whether it\u2019s worth using the lens and won\u2019t \u2018ruin\u2019 anything in the image.<\/p>

There is no doubt that filters are great tools, but you should defi\u00adni\u00adtely not buy cheap filters. Espe\u00adci\u00adally not if you normally use high-quality lenses and good cameras. Other\u00adwise you\u2019ll end up buying twice. (Volun\u00adtary adver\u00adti\u00adsing:) I myself use filters from the brand NiSi<\/a><\/span>(*) and I am very satis\u00adfied with them. Also the filters from Kase<\/a><\/span>(*) I have already tested once and are in no way infe\u00adrior to my filters. The colour rendi\u00adtion is perfect and I have only been able to see effects like the one in the video in the most extreme lighting situa\u00adtions. But I\u2019m sure no other filter manu\u00adfac\u00adturer will do better. <\/p>

In general, I would ther\u00ade\u00adfore advise using filters! But only if they can contri\u00adbute some\u00adthing to the final result. So the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter is defi\u00adni\u00adtely not an all-purpose filter. You have to use it consciously and ques\u00adtion its use criti\u00adcally from time to time, then you won\u2019t go wrong. <\/p>

Before buying, you should consider which is, or will be, your largest lens in terms of filter diameter. With inex\u00adpen\u00adsive adapter rings, you can then adapt the filters to all smaller lenses. For me it\u2019s the 82 mm of my Sony FE 2.8\/16\u201335 mm GM<\/span><\/a>(*).<\/p>

What you should also bear in mind is that a little light is lost when you screw on the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter, so you will have to expose one or two stops longer or increase the ISO a little, depen\u00adding on the situa\u00adtion. If the expo\u00adsure time is not critical, use this for optimum quality; if the expo\u00adsure time is critical (e.g. due to moving leaves), then increase the ISO. New denoi\u00adsing tools in image proces\u00adsing can help if the noise is too intru\u00adsive for your taste. <\/p>

You should also be careful with blue skies and extre\u00admely wide-angle shots. Here the angle to the sun is so diffe\u00adrent depen\u00adding on the corner of the picture that the effect within the picture varies greatly. However, this problem can also be solved with a few tricks in image editing. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When to use the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter is ther\u00ade\u00adfore an \u2018effect filter\u2019. Theo\u00adre\u00adti\u00adcally, you don\u2019t have to use it at all. It also depends a little on your own photo\u00adgra\u00adphic style and the final image effect you want to achieve. Since the effect can be enormous in diffuse light in the forest, as you can see in the video, I would always recom\u00admend trying it out in damp forests. If the effect is strong and desired, then you should use it. I usually test its use in the forest. In haze and fog, the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter can also reduce the fog a little. If this is unde\u00adsi\u00adrable, leave it out as well. <\/p>

The use of the filter is most critical in back\u00adlighting and, if in doubt, I would rather leave it out. If there is time, perhaps take both pictures, with and without the filter. If you take photos in the morning and evening but not quite in the golden hour, then a pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter can have an extre\u00admely strong influence, espe\u00adci\u00adally in the sky, if the image compo\u00adsi\u00adtion is aligned at approx. 90\u00b0 to the side of the sun. Some\u00adtimes even too strong. So take the time to check the image on location. <\/p>

If you want to see reflec\u00adtions on a lake, don\u2019t use the filter. However, if you want to see reflec\u00adtions because an element of your fore\u00adground, e.g. protrudes into the lake, then use the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter. The effect is enormous on slightly damp paths. Depen\u00adding on what you want, you should either omit or add the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter. If, for example, an evening glow is reflected on a damp tarmac path, I like to include this in the picture. However, if I want to include the dark tarmac in the picture because it only reflects the boring blue of a sky, then I use the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter to make it less reflective.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Be aware of the effect of the pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter and be crea\u00adtive. Espe\u00adci\u00adally in the forest, I always check its use and decide on the spot what I want. In fog, I usually leave it out, but I usually use it when the leaves are damp. <\/p>

In my eyes, it is the filter that is most wort\u00adhwhile and is used most frequently. This is followed by ND filters for long expo\u00adsures, for example. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
