Taking photos when the weather doesn\u2019t cooperate<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOh man, I wish I\u2019d just stayed in bed. Now I have 30 minutes of hiking uphill in complete dark\u00adness through the Pala\u00adti\u00adnate Forest and over an hour\u2019s drive behind me and I\u2019m stan\u00adding here in the middle of the fog soup instead of above it as planned. And yet the weather models were all in agree\u00adment. Fog level, dawn, ever\u00ady\u00adthing should have been fine. What now? Turn around, go home and give up or pull through and see what you can get out of it with a little crea\u00adti\u00advity? In this BLOG\/VLOG, I finally get to grips with the auto\u00admatic focus bracke\u00adting of my Sony a7IV, go in the direc\u00adtion of B&W fine art with my images, show you how to get black and white images quickly and easily in LR\/PS and prove to you that giving up is not an option and that you can always find some\u00adthing photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally interesting! <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Of course, you leave the house with a certain inten\u00adtion. A certain image in your head that you want to capture. You look at the weather fore\u00adcast in the evening, maybe again in the early morning, before you set off and you know where you want to go and what you want to photo\u00adgraph. Then suddenly you\u2019re there, on loca\u00adtion, possibly with a longer journey behind you, like me, and you realize that ever\u00ady\u00adthing you\u2019ve planned won\u2019t work out. Disap\u00adpoin\u00adting. Of course it is. But that should only be the case in the first few seconds, because with a bit of crea\u00adti\u00advity, a keen eye and know\u00adledge of as many areas of photo\u00adgraphy as possible, you\u2019re bound to come up with some\u00adthing that results in a great picture. <\/p>

My inten\u00adtion was to photo\u00adgraph the R\u00f6tzen\u00adfelsen in the autumnal morning light with fog in the valley. Ever\u00ady\u00adthing had to be right. Perfect medium-high clouds. A suffi\u00adci\u00adently large gap in the clouds and the upper limit of the fog should be around 300\u2013400 meters. Now the R\u00f6tzen\u00adfelsen at approx. 450 m is the perfect spot for this morning. <\/p>

While hiking up the moun\u00adtain, I walked through a thick soup of fog. Only my head\u00adlamp tried to shine through the fog, but only managed to do so for a few meters. Fort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adtely, the path, the trail markings and the GPS didn\u2019t let me down, which is why I reached the rock without any problems. Some\u00adtimes you\u2019re only a bend or a few meters away from the top of the fog and you\u2019re suddenly in clear view. So I walked to the end of the path. But no chance. The fog seemed to have moved much higher. Maybe 500m, maybe 600m or even higher. You couldn\u2019t see anything. And now? Well, I\u2019m certainly not going to get up so early, drive around for an hour and walk through the dark\u00adness for 30 minutes, only to return home without a picture. And thick fog isn\u2019t the worst weather condi\u00adtion for photo\u00adgraphy. So off we go in search of alter\u00adna\u00adtive motifs. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Crea\u00adti\u00advity as an option<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Of course, pictures in the forest in thick fog are always an option. The fog helps to sepa\u00adrate the trunks of the trees and adds depth to the picture, as the contrast decreases with incre\u00adasing distance. But I could probably take these pictures anywhere in the Pala\u00adti\u00adnate Forest at this moment. So I want to work out and photo\u00adgraph the character, the special features of this spot. <\/p>

Other options if you\u2019re in a tight spot and the weather isn\u2019t playing into your hands include using filters for long expo\u00adsures, looking for special details and taking macro-like shots, or using yourself as a model and taking action shots. For the latter, simply use interval shoo\u00adting and take a few dozen photos of yourself within a few minutes, stan\u00adding, sitting, clim\u00adbing\u2026 Maybe you\u2019ll manage to discover mini\u00adma\u00adlist scenes that you can later edit like fine art. Look for contrasts, inte\u00adres\u00adting fore\u00adground elements (if you don\u2019t have the fore\u00adsight to create a beau\u00adtiful back\u00adground), leading lines, etc. Or deli\u00adbera\u00adtely create images that you can later convert to black and white. High-contrast elements help here. You may be able to enhance these on loca\u00adtion using the pola\u00adri\u00adzing filter, so think about this too and try it out.<\/p>

In the picture below I found the rock, which was still damp below the edge and dry above. Added to this were the autumnal yellow leaves and the red rock. A good way to get a high-contrast image by adjus\u00adting the black and white mix accor\u00addingly. With a little dodging and burning, you can quickly create an inte\u00adres\u00adting and high-contrast black and white image in fine art style.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
