While I was running, I thought to myself that a visit to the forest with my camera would be wort\u00adhwhile. At home I set up my equip\u00adment and saw the email that the Sony a7IV can now do focus bracke\u00adting. I have to try that out. Focus bracke\u00adting \u2014 for what?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When it comes to mush\u00adroom photo\u00adgraphy, we basi\u00adcally have two options. We can try to show the mush\u00adrooms in their envi\u00adron\u00adment and try to create a photo that has a conti\u00adnuous sharp\u00adness. This is not so easy, because many mush\u00adrooms are very small in rela\u00adtion to the trees that usually surround them. This means I have to get very close to get the mush\u00adrooms large in the picture. With a wide-angle lens, elements that are placed very close to the camera appear very large. However, this has a disad\u00advan\u00adtage: it is almost impos\u00adsible to get ever\u00ady\u00adthing in focus in one image. We ther\u00ade\u00adfore have to take more shots with diffe\u00adrent focus points in order to put them back toge\u00adther later in Photo\u00adshop using photo stacking. This focus bracke\u00adting can be done manu\u00adally or, if you are the lucky owner of a camera with an auto\u00admatic bracke\u00adting func\u00adtion, \u201cauto\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcally\u201d.<\/p>

The other possi\u00adbi\u00adlity is that we want to capture the mush\u00adroom nicely cropped, with the softest possible bokeh. An aper\u00adture that is as open as possible is ideal for this. However, mush\u00adrooms are round and if the aper\u00adture is wide open, the center may be sharp, but elements of the mushroom\u2019s head that are closer and further away may no longer be. We should ther\u00ade\u00adfore close the aper\u00adture until the mush\u00adroom is comple\u00adtely in focus. But what happens to our back\u00adground then? Right, it is no longer as soft. Bracke\u00adting helps us here too. Macro photo\u00adgraphers often use a macro bracket, moving the camera milli\u00admetre by milli\u00admetre in order to focus on the subject in its enti\u00adrety. The camera can now do this with auto\u00admatic focus bracke\u00adting. The result is that we can use stacking to achieve a comple\u00adtely sharp subject and yet a soft background. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the video (below)<\/a> you can see my first attempts at using auto\u00admatic focus bracke\u00adting. The first pictures are really not master\u00adpieces, but serve to fami\u00adlia\u00adrize myself with the tech\u00adnique. When I feel more comfor\u00adtable with it and have gained some expe\u00adri\u00adence, I will certainly make another video about this tech\u00adnique. First of all, however, it has to be said that the results with the subject stacked and the aper\u00adture rather wide open were very plea\u00adsing. When bracke\u00adting the wide-angle shots, however, I made a few mistakes as I lacked sharp\u00adness at the front and back. <\/p>

With manual focus bracke\u00adting, I am always pretty sure that I have captured all focus planes. Not with auto\u00admated bracke\u00adting. Here, the focus point was actually a decisive factor. I had initi\u00adally focused as usual, i.e. approx. hyper\u00adfocal distance or at the center of the subject. This resulted in my first failed attempts. In the stan\u00addard setting, the bracke\u00adting func\u00adtion creates images from the selected focus point and moves it back\u00adwards into the image. This means you have to select the closest point to the camera when focu\u00adsing where all fore\u00adground elements are in focus and then press the shutter button.<\/p>

If the back\u00adground of the last image is also in focus, then the number of images is suffi\u00adcient. If there are blurred areas between the sharp\u00adness levels of the indi\u00advi\u00addual images, you must reduce the step size, but also increase the number of images. You can also increase the step size and reduce the number of images if you notice that you have a lot of over\u00adlap\u00adping areas. (However, you can also simply work with 3 or 4 shots instead of all of them afterwards).<\/p>

So if you want to stack and create a nice crop, e.g. with a longer focal length, then use a wider aper\u00adture and focus on the fore\u00admost point of your subject. The camera shifts the focus to the rear. Ideally, you will still have the rear\u00admost visible point of the subject in focus and the back\u00adground will remain nice and soft. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It is ther\u00ade\u00adfore another tech\u00adnique that you should spend two hours working on to master. Expe\u00adri\u00adence and analysis of your images should then help you to realize the images as desired. <\/p>

The larger your magni\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion, espe\u00adci\u00adally in the extreme macro range, or the wider the aper\u00adture, the more shots you will need. If you are very wide-angle and have the aper\u00adture wide open, three are probably suffi\u00adcient. So try it out. Diffe\u00adrent subjects, diffe\u00adrent focal lengths, diffe\u00adrent image compo\u00adsi\u00adtions. Then you\u2019ll soon get the hang of it!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
