\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tI grab my ruck\u00adsack and quietly close the door of the vaca\u00adtion apart\u00adment on the farm behind me. It\u2019s still pitch dark outside and I\u2019m comple\u00adtely unfa\u00admi\u00adliar with the surroun\u00addings, but I set off to take photos anyway. At last, after what feels like ages. I know that the area around the farm is partly untouched nature. So off into the unknown. There\u2019s always some\u00adthing to photo\u00adgraph. But this time I don\u2019t even know which direc\u00adtion is best, I have to let my intui\u00adtion guide me. Will anything come of it? Let\u2019s see what this land\u00adscape here in the Allg\u00e4u has to offer. This morning will show. <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Just a few days ago, we decided to go away again. Spen\u00adding a few days on a farm with our children would be great, wouldn\u2019t it? So we sear\u00adched for a free place and found what we were looking for in the Allg\u00e4u. And now, just a few days later, I was drag\u00adging the family\u2019s suit\u00adcases up to our apart\u00adment above the farm in the rain. It would be nice here if it weren\u2019t for the rain. But I think to myself that it will get better in a few days. By the time I had stowed ever\u00ady\u00adthing in the rooms on the evening of our arrival, it was getting dark outside. No time to have a quick look around and explore the area.<\/p>

I checked the weather fore\u00adcast for the next morning. A veil of fog. Well, that sounds good. If only I had had time to look for suitable motifs in the surroun\u00adding area. Then it would be a photo walk into the unknown. What else could I do? That\u2019s also a chall\u00adenge. A bit of loca\u00adtion scou\u00adting while I try to get a top picture. Let\u2019s see if I\u2019m successful.<\/p>

I had already scouted out a few spots in the imme\u00addiate vici\u00adnity, it\u2019s not like that. But if there\u2019s fog right on my door\u00adstep, why should I drive 20 or 30 km when there\u2019s a risk that there might not be any fog. So I started trying to find some\u00adthing here in the dark. Instinc\u00adtively, I ran to the right, down the path a little. I have no idea whether this is a dead end or not.<\/p>

It is often said that you can only be successful in land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy if you plan your photos. The image compo\u00adsi\u00adtion should already be in your head in advance. The light on the subject should be calcu\u00adlated before\u00adhand. Apps help with plan\u00adning. You only need to set off if the weather fore\u00adcast is right. When the day arrives and ever\u00ady\u00adthing comes toge\u00adther. Go out, take the picture, pack it up, edit it, port\u00adfolio shot done. Sounds kind of static, unemo\u00adtional, doesn\u2019t it? Like working through a few files in the office. Somehow I\u2019ve often had the feeling that this perfec\u00adtionism in prepa\u00adra\u00adtion takes the magic out of the moment in nature.<\/p>

Yes, I scout, I plan, I look at the weather fore\u00adcast, but espe\u00adci\u00adally as someone who doesn\u2019t earn a living with land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy, but does it along\u00adside my job and family, I have to take what comes along when I have the time. I often go out when I don\u2019t know what to expect. On the off chance. If I end up with a photo that I would hang on my wall, then the day was a success. Living in the moment, \u201cgetting involved\u201d with what the world offers me, also allows me to connect emotio\u00adnally with nature. Then I am a photo\u00adgrapher who is guided more by intui\u00adtion than by apps, who hopes for the luck of the brave rather than relying on unemo\u00adtional plan\u00adning down to the last detail. <\/p>

So I walk through the dark night, wherever my feet and my intui\u00adtion may take me. I concen\u00adtrate on reco\u00adgni\u00adzing anything at all in the dark. Then I set up my tripod at the edge of the path and take my first photo. An expo\u00adsure time of 30 seconds is needed to get the neces\u00adsary light onto the sensor. It\u2019s still that dark. So there\u2019s no need to rush. I enjoy the silence. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Intui\u00adtion & attention<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I\u2019ve already been out for a few minutes and it\u2019s slowly starting to get dark. I\u2019ve already taken a few long expo\u00adsures. The subjects I had disco\u00advered in the dark\u00adness were perfect for the blue hour. But some\u00adthing told me that there wouldn\u2019t be anything inte\u00adres\u00adting on the path I had taken as soon as the sun got a little stronger. So I turned back to go in a diffe\u00adrent direc\u00adtion. It later turned out to be the right decision. Even if it wasn\u2019t going to be possible to see over the fog from here that morning. <\/p>

Is good intui\u00adtion neces\u00adsary to be a good photo\u00adgrapher? It is certainly helpful to have good intui\u00adtion. But a wealth of expe\u00adri\u00adence also helps if you can assess whether or not some\u00adthing might turn out right at one point or another. Whether it is worth waiting, so to speak. If you have the feeling that you don\u2019t have good intui\u00adtion, you should defi\u00adni\u00adtely start plan\u00adning your photos well. A well-planned photo will help you if you make the wrong decis\u00adions too often on loca\u00adtion. There is abso\u00adlutely nothing wrong with being the \u201cplanner\u201d type of land\u00adscape photographer. <\/p>

I have often found that even the best planned photos don\u2019t work out as planned. Not that the sun suddenly rises in a diffe\u00adrent place on the horizon, no. But an approa\u00adching cloud that prevents the sun star, or a cloud forma\u00adtion that lite\u00adrally demands a diffe\u00adrent image compo\u00adsi\u00adtion, or some\u00adthing similar. A newly opened buil\u00adding site on loca\u00adtion can also throw a spanner in the works. There are so many things that can come between the plan\u00adning and the photo. In this case, whether you are more of a planner or an intui\u00adtive photo\u00adgrapher, your atten\u00adtion is required above all. If you reco\u00adgnize what will inter\u00adfere with the picture so that your photo can\u2019t work out, if you reco\u00adgnize what options are still available, some\u00adtimes even without refe\u00adrence to your planned picture, then you can still be successful.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Photo\u00adgra\u00adphing unknown landscapes<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Time and again, I reach the point where I\u2019m stan\u00adding some\u00adwhere in an unfa\u00admi\u00adliar land\u00adscape taking photo\u00adgraphs. It would be almost utopian to think that you always scouted every loca\u00adtion in advance or planned every picture on loca\u00adtion. So I\u2019ve always been guided by my intui\u00adtion. The emotion towards nature and the land\u00adscape on loca\u00adtion and try to remain as atten\u00adtive as possible. For details and sections of the land\u00adscape, i.e. more inti\u00admate scenes that I shoot with a tele\u00adphoto lens, I think about how the scene might look in a wide-angle photo, and I also pay atten\u00adtion to the small details: flowers, mush\u00adrooms, leaves, mosses, ferns, struc\u00adtures on wood, and, and, and. You probably over\u00adlook hundreds of possi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties. When I\u2019m out and about with fellow photo\u00adgraphers, I always smile at what they see and discover and they are also fasci\u00adnated by what I have captured. <\/p>

So when I\u2019m out and about in foreign climes, I try not to make the compo\u00adsi\u00adtions too compli\u00adcated. Simple leading lines and S\u2011curves almost always work and make it easier to compose an image. In the wide-angle range, always try to be aware of the fore\u00adground, middle ground and back\u00adground without thin\u00adking too compli\u00adcated. If you are already some\u00adwhat fami\u00adliar with a loca\u00adtion, it is much easier to create complex compo\u00adsi\u00adtions than in comple\u00adtely unfa\u00admi\u00adliar places. <\/p>

As far as that is concerned, I am also more of a docu\u00admen\u00adtary-artistic type of photo\u00adgrapher. I rarely stay with a compo\u00adsi\u00adtion for a long time. I analyze the scene quite quickly in my head and then quickly have an idea of how and from which posi\u00adtion I want to photo\u00adgraph what nature pres\u00adents to me. The visual balance is also more of an intui\u00adtive, emotional thing for me. I seem to have inter\u00adna\u00adlized this over the years, even after many analyses of my own pictures and those of well-known photo artists. If it fits, I move on. I look for another perspec\u00adtive or another motif. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It\u2019s the same with other \u201crules\u201d in photo\u00adgraphy. Perso\u00adnally, I prefer to talk about the toolbox. Here, tech\u00adnical skills are just as important as the ability to create an inte\u00adres\u00adting compo\u00adsi\u00adtion. Some\u00adtimes the rule of thirds is suitable, other times it\u2019s perfect symmetry. It is essen\u00adtial to be able to reco\u00adgnize and see light. \u2014 Yes, not ever\u00adyone can do that \ud83d\ude09 But what if the light is so flat that there is neither a direc\u00adtion nor a parti\u00adcular color? Can I never take a top picture at that moment? Certainly not! There is always a subject or a picture idea that is perfect for this. <\/p>

If you have inter\u00adna\u00adlized the tools and can call them up at any time, you will intui\u00adtively pull out the right tool at the right time without having to think too much about it. And this brings me full circle to my concerns at the begin\u00adning of the morning about setting off without having scouted the land\u00adscape before\u00adhand. If you\u2019re a capable photo\u00adgrapher who has worked with all the tools and inter\u00adna\u00adlized them, then you can still be successful if you don\u2019t have ever\u00ady\u00adthing planned out. Staying at home will only help you not take a photo, but if you go out, you\u2019ll defi\u00adni\u00adtely come home with some\u00adthing to show for it. For sure!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I grab my ruck\u00adsack and quietly close the door of the vaca\u00adtion apart\u00adment on the farm behind me. It\u2019s still pitch dark outside and I\u2019m comple\u00adtely unfa\u00admi\u00adliar with the surroun\u00addings, but I set off to take photos anyway. At last, after what feels like ages. I know that the area around the farm is partly untouched nature. So off into the unknown. There\u2019s always some\u00adthing to photo\u00adgraph. But this time I don\u2019t even know which direc\u00adtion is best, I have to let my intui\u00adtion guide me. Will anything come of it?
