\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sitting at the break\u00adfast table in our flat, sipping comfor\u00adtably on my laptop. The weather maps for the next two days show good weather for our plans. One more click and our ferries are booked. It\u2019s easy and pretty straight\u00adfor\u00adward online. These are the Faroe Islands too. I\u2019ve booked a ferry to Mykines and Puffin Island for us today and a ferry to Kalsoy for tomorrow. So the programme for the next few days is set. <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We visit the cutest inha\u00adbi\u00adtants of the Faroe Islands, take a look at a few more unknown spots that are super easy to reach, a modera\u00adtely diffi\u00adcult hike with a great view of Klakkur, drive through Klaksv\u00edk and hike to two of the abso\u00adlute high\u00adlights of the Faroe Islands. However, we still had a little time before our ferry to Mykines departed. Even though we knew it wouldn\u2019t be the ideal time of day for it, we headed to a nearby spot, the witch\u2019s finger: Tr\u00f8ll\u00adkon\u00adu\u00adfingur. Lite\u00adrally trans\u00adlated, this means troll\u2019s finger.<\/p>

It\u2019s about a 20-minute walk from the car park. On the way you will pass a beau\u00adtiful house, which you can use as a wonderful fore\u00adground in better light than we had (early morning or evening) to photo\u00adgraph it with the island of Koltur in the background.<\/p>

To get a slightly better direc\u00adtion of light, I used my drone and flew as far out to sea as made sense from the angle, so that the finger and the moun\u00adtain were still sepa\u00adrated. For another picture I was lucky that a ship sailed past the finger, which also adds size to the picture, as you can see how high this finger actually is.<\/p>

Mykines<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the after\u00adnoon, we travelled to Mykines, the western\u00admost island of the Faroe Islands. It can only be reached by heli\u00adc\u00adopter or ferry from S\u00f8rv\u00e1gur. It is considered the home of the puffins on the Faroe Islands. The trip out to the island is defi\u00adni\u00adtely a high\u00adlight. In good weather, you pass close to Dran\u00adgarnir. But the coast\u00adline along the south coast of Mykines is also very impres\u00adsive and is some\u00adwhat remi\u00adnis\u00adcent of the coast\u00adline of Hawaii.<\/p>

However, when we arrived on site, a nuisance began that we didn\u2019t have on our radar. We were prac\u00adti\u00adcally forced to book a guided tour for no less than DKK 500 (!) per person. Only the place itself is free. This means that the fee has more than doubled in the last two years. Anyone who thinks they are getting more for their money is mistaken. The hiking route to the light\u00adhouse is now closed and will probably no longer be open to tourists. In other words, for just under \u20ac70, you get a short tour of the village, a few scanty details about puffins and a guide to accom\u00adpany you on the walk up the slope. Once you reach the puffins at the top, you\u2019re lucky if you see any puffins at all due to the size of the group and the guide only serves as a watchdog to make sure you don\u2019t leave the path.<\/p>

I under\u00adstand the locals. They want to make sure that no nests (burrows) of the puffins are trampled on. You can believe that or not. But nevert\u00adheless, at first glance it seems as if the locals have simply agreed to fleece the tourists and intro\u00adduced the obli\u00adga\u00adtion to \u201cguide\u201d them. In any case, a bitter after\u00adtaste remains.<\/p>

At least we were able to achieve our daily goal of obser\u00adving, filming and photo\u00adgra\u00adphing puffins. If we hadn\u2019t seen any for the money, it would have been even more annoying. We spent the after\u00adnoon on site. When the guide realised that we were really inte\u00adrested in the photos, that we were very fami\u00adliar with the puffins and that we would abide by all the rules, she even left us alone. So we had plenty of time to film and take photos. Later, I also photo\u00adgra\u00adphed some nice details in the harbour while waiting for the ferry. There was a real spec\u00adtacle of seagulls between large rocks.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Once we were back and could look past the annoyance, I checked the weather again for the evening. Lo and behold, some\u00adthing had changed. The View\u00adfindr app now even showed a 50:50 chance of a sunset at G\u00e1sa\u00addalur. So we shouldn\u2019t miss the chance. So we drove to G\u00e1sa\u00addalur, but this time directly without a stopover.<\/p>

We met our fellow photo\u00adgraphers from Italy again on site. We told them about Mykines and our annoyance at the further increase in the fee to DKK 500. He unders\u00adtood our anger, but empha\u00adsised that we didn\u2019t have to go to Mykines because of the puffins, as he had seen some at the water\u00adfall earlier. So we stopped by the water\u00adfall again and found a whole family of perhaps 12 puffins. That evening I took lots more pictures of these cute feathered friends.<\/p>

I also made what felt like hundreds of attempts to capture details of M\u00fala\u00adfo\u00adssur in calm condi\u00adtions. I managed to get some great shots. Once with a puffin that flew very close to the water\u00adfall and some shots with seagulls that look really spec\u00adta\u00adcular. The sky over G\u00e1sa\u00addalur remained lifeless for quite a long time, which is why I had plenty of time for such shots. But then suddenly some colour came through on the horizon. We hoped it would grow a little more, but this small local sunset only lasted a few minutes and then the colour and light were comple\u00adtely gone. So we said goodbye and drove back to our accommodation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As always, the morning routine included checking the weather fore\u00adcast. On the programme for the Faroe Islands today: low cloud, but at a reasonable height, rain possible in places. There was a good chance of seeing a few fjord view\u00adpoints that we had already visited on our way past during the day, but visi\u00adbi\u00adlity was around zero. The under\u00adside of the clouds should also be suitable for the famous Snake Road and a few nice shots of it.<\/p>

And so it was. The weather was fine, the clouds were nice and low, some\u00adtimes it drizzled a little, but we could see ever\u00ady\u00adthing we wanted. We slowly got to grips with the weather on the Faroe Islands and were able to better assess what it would look like at the indi\u00advi\u00addual locations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The plan for the afternoon\/evening had already been made. The Faroe Islands should be covered with clouds in the centre, but the sky should be clear to the north-west, which should make for a beau\u00adtiful sunset at Kallur light\u00adhouse. It was to be a high\u00adlight of our trip.<\/p>

We set off in the after\u00adnoon and drove towards Klaksvik. On the way, we stopped again briefly at a spot we had already disco\u00advered the day before. A \u201csmall\u201d crevice in the middle of a hill on V\u00e1gar. I laun\u00adched the drone and mano\u00adeu\u00advred it into the crevice. One shot in and one shot out should be enough. Then carefully fly out of the narrow crevice again and continue on our journey to Klaksvik, from where our ferry was due to leave in the early evening.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

But first we wanted to enjoy the view from Klakkur. A short hike of about 45 minutes leads up to Klakkur. The climb is easy to master if you are in average physical condi\u00adtion. From there you have a wonderful view of Kalsoy (left), Kunoy (centre) and Bordoy (right). We strug\u00adgled a little with the time and the weather. We knew that the clouds in the centre of the islands could throw a spanner in the works. As our ferry was due to leave soon, we couldn\u2019t wait too long.<\/p>

The summit was in the clouds at times when we were there. Some\u00adtimes we had a good view of the fjords for a short time, but before we could look for ideal compo\u00adsi\u00adtions, we were usually shrouded in fog again. However, it is defi\u00adni\u00adtely a great, rewar\u00adding view\u00adpoint when the clouds aren\u2019t too low.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

So we set off again in the direc\u00adtion of Klaksvik and the ferry. It\u2019s important to mention that you should book the ferry online in advance. Car parking spaces are very limited. Some jour\u00adneys can only be booked by tele\u00adphone. The number can be found on the website of the online booking system. An uncom\u00adpli\u00adcated phone call and a few minutes later the acti\u00adva\u00adtion, so that we could book.<\/p>

We bought some refresh\u00adments and as we still had a few minutes, we watched a foot\u00adball match in Klaksvik in front of an impres\u00adsive fjord back\u00addrop. We passed the waiting time quite nicely and then boarded the ferry. The ferry takes you past the island of Kunoy into the other arm of the fjord and heads straight for Sy\u00f0ra\u00addalur on the island of Kalsoy. You can\u2019t really get lost on Kalsoy itself. There is only one road from Sy\u00f0ra\u00addalur to Tr\u00f8l\u00adlanes. On the way up north, you drive through a total of four dark, spar\u00adsely lit tunnels. The journey is already beau\u00adtiful, because you can see the remo\u00adteness of this island.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We drove past Husar to Mikl\u00ada\u00addalur. Once there, we got to know two nice local caf\u00e9 owners. Their caf\u00e9 is right next to the mermaid, which is actually a seal woman (kopa\u00adkonan). We had a nice chat. It was about sheep farming, agri\u00adcul\u00adture and how life on the Faroe Islands is chan\u00adging because of tourists. More guided walks, events, tourist bars and caf\u00e9s, etc. and that tourists are both a curse and a bles\u00adsing. Nature conser\u00adva\u00adtion, envi\u00adron\u00admental protec\u00adtion, erosion, but also GDP, source of income, etc.<\/p>

The story of the seal woman, by the way, goes back to an old legend. It said that the seals were actually people who sought their death in the sea and went back ashore on certain nights of the year to take off their fur and dance. A farmer stole a pretty woman\u2019s fur to take her as his wife. Long-story-short, it was a pretty unsuc\u00adcessful love story, she escaped, he went seal hunting and killed her family, and the rather one-sided romance ended with the seal woman retur\u00adning as a troll and cursing him and all the men of Kalsoy. They were to fall off the cliffs or die at sea until their bones lined the whole of Kalsoy. As men are still dying at sea, the locals believe that the debt has not yet been paid.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We continued on to Tr\u00f8l\u00adlanes, just a few minutes further north. We had got used to the fees by now and paid our DKK 200 per person as a matter of course before setting off towards the light\u00adhouse. The path was actually safe and not too diffi\u00adcult, but the condi\u00adtions made it a slip\u00adpery party, slip\u00adpery wet grass, muddy, trodden path \u2014 it could quickly pull your feet away. This made it more stre\u00adnuous than it should have been. But at least the weather co-operated as planned. The sun came out at just the right time.<\/p>

We first went to the view\u00adpoint on the eastern ridge. From there you have a fanta\u00adstic view along the nort\u00adhern\u00admost points of the neigh\u00adbou\u00adring islands. Photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally, wide-angle, stan\u00addard and tele\u00adphoto are possible from here. A great scene with an insane, almost crazy scale is created when someone hikes over the edge to the second view\u00adpoint and you take a picture of them with a focal length of approx. 100 mm. As there were no hikers on the way, I sent my father to walk over the edge several times.<\/p>

Once the pictures were in the can, I went to the second vantage point myself to enjoy the world\u2019s most beau\u00adtiful view. Photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally, 16mm wide-angle full-frame doesn\u2019t feel wide enough here. If you want to capture ever\u00ady\u00adthing, you have to take a vertical or hori\u00adzontal panorama. The drone also has to fly far, far away or use a panorama to capture this massive back\u00addrop in its enti\u00adrety. You don\u2019t realise the dimen\u00adsions, even when you see the little tiny white seagulls flying along the cliffs. We were there for a good 2 hours, enjoying the view, taking photos, filming and marvel\u00adling. A moment that you wish you could capture forever. A photo\u00adgraph can do that, at least in part, it\u2019s simply amazing.<\/p>

The last ferry took us back to Klaksvik, just 1 hour and 10 minutes later we were back at our flat. Grateful for what we had seen, a special moment for the soul. This world is big, unique and wonderful. What a bles\u00adsing that we were able and allowed to expe\u00adri\u00adence it for ourselves.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hike to Drangarnir<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For the next day \u2014 the last day on the Faroe Islands \u2014 we had decided on a hike to Dran\u00adgarnir. It is also an impres\u00adsive natural monu\u00adment that can only be reached on a guided tour. The cost is not cheap. About 80\u20ac converted. For this you get a little infor\u00adma\u00adtion about the place itself, a hike lasting 5\u20136 hours and a distance of around 12 kilo\u00adme\u00adtres. An alter\u00adna\u00adtive is a boat tour to the end of the head\u00adland. This is only slightly more expen\u00adsive and is a good option for those who are not free from vertigo or are not good at walking.<\/p>

The path is a little more chal\u00adlen\u00adging at the start, very narrow and slip\u00adpery in places. On the right, it goes straight down into the water, on the left it climbs steeply up the slope. Once you have completed the first 20 minutes, however, the most chal\u00adlen\u00adging part is already over. You pass old houses or their ruins, a pebble beach, a water\u00adfall and fenced-in meadows. The ascent to the upper vantage point is sweat-indu\u00adcing. The guide took a break with us there so that we had time to take photos. The motif was Dran\u00adgarnir from a distance. Photo tip: look for a fore\u00adground here too and go for a slightly wider angle. I had the feeling that tele\u00adphoto shots are not parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly inte\u00adres\u00adting here. Unless you can find suitable \u201cdistrac\u00adtors\u201d.<\/p>

The last few metres, the descent to Dran\u00adgarnir, is then less deman\u00adding, although you should still take care. You also have plenty of time to take photos directly at Dran\u00adgarnir. Due to the many people on the hike, this time was also neces\u00adsary. There was always someone stan\u00adding or walking in front of the lens. This could be reme\u00addied by compo\u00adsing several shots in Photo\u00adshop or using a long expo\u00adsure to \u201celimi\u00adnate\u201d people. When most people were already heading back, I had another perfect oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity. Photo tip: A person in the fore\u00adground is certainly inte\u00adres\u00adting, take the cliff ridge as the fore\u00adground, or posi\u00adtion a person at the end of the cliff to visua\u00adlise the size of the rock.<\/p>

Further down, if the swell allows it, photo\u00adgraphy at water level is possible. Flying drones is only permitted here with the owner\u2019s permis\u00adsion, espe\u00adci\u00adally during the bree\u00adding season. The way back is a little less stre\u00adnuous as you walk further down along the fjord and not via the upper view\u00adpoint. The trip to the Faroe Islands was a sensa\u00adtional expe\u00adri\u00adence. A great trip, a beau\u00adtiful, impres\u00adsive country with magni\u00adfi\u00adcent land\u00adscapes. The Faroe Islands are certainly not everyone\u2019s cup of tea. The weather is a bit of a lottery. But there is hardly any other country that looks so bril\u00adliant in pictures in \u201clousy\u201d weather. Mykines is well worth a visit, but you can also find puffins else\u00adwhere if you are obser\u00advant and don\u2019t mind paying for a guided tour.<\/p>

Faroe Islands \u2014 a country where tourism is still in its infancy. You can see that in many places. Nature conser\u00adva\u00adtion is very important to the Faroese in large parts, but I don\u2019t think they really know how to go about protec\u00adting nature while still allo\u00adwing tourism. Simply char\u00adging more and more fees in the hope that fewer people will visit is not enough to protect the envi\u00adron\u00adment. Perhaps the state needs to become more active here and not rely on the landow\u00adners alone. The protec\u00adtion of their land is also important to them, but so is a full wallet.<\/p>

The Faroe Islands are defi\u00adni\u00adtely worth a trip for photo\u00adgraphers and hiking enthu\u00adsi\u00adasts. But don\u2019t unde\u00adre\u00adsti\u00admate the dimen\u00adsions and the weather. Also note that there isn\u2019t always a refuge like in the Alps, so you\u2019ll be safe on the road!<\/p>
