We sit across the dining table from our rented apart\u00adment in Mi\u00f0v\u00e1gur and are some\u00adwhat disil\u00adlu\u00adsioned. A look at the weather maps for the next few days dampened our mood from the previous evening. Rain, low clouds, fog. Will we be able to see anything at all when we\u2019re out and about?<\/p>

In my last blog\/vlog post, I talked about the weather on the Faroe Islands. Also the pecu\u00adlia\u00adri\u00adties that we were just begin\u00adning to under\u00adstand \u2014 or at least try to understand.<\/p>

Today there was supposed to be a lot of rain, fog in some parts and very low-hanging clouds. As we won\u2019t be able to see very far, the plan was to visit the capital T\u00f3rshavn. This is located in the south, on the east coast of the island of Streymoy. Its name, as you might guess, actually comes from Thor, the Norse god of thunder and light\u00adning and, of course, the harbor. It is home to almost a third of the total population.<\/p>

In T\u00f3rshavn there is a small penin\u00adsula called Tinganes. There you will find densely packed turf houses in a typical \u201cold town\u201d and former govern\u00adment buil\u00addings painted red. Also worth seeing is a small fort\u00adress with a light\u00adhouse. This was used during the Second World War to fend off the Nazis. During this time, the Faroe Islands were under peaceful British occu\u00adpa\u00adtion, who were afraid that Germany would want to use the Faroe Islands to launch an inva\u00adsion of Great Britain.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The weather remained as it was, even after we had explored T\u00f3rshavn, and visi\u00adbi\u00adlity even dete\u00adrio\u00adrated slightly. For this reason, we visited a nearby water\u00adfall on the Sand\u00e1 River. This mystical-looking weather was perfect for this.<\/p>

At the place where we visited the Sand\u00e1, it flows under an old stone bridge and down a small slope over a few rapids. The water\u00adfall is wider than it is high and was espe\u00adci\u00adally full of water on the day we were there.<\/p>

Photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally, I proceeded as I always do with water\u00adfalls. I tried to find the ideal expo\u00adsure time, which is usually some\u00adwhere between 1\/10 s and 1 s in my opinion. Close the aper\u00adture suffi\u00adci\u00adently so that ever\u00ady\u00adthing is sharp, whereby the back\u00adground in the fog, in this case the old stone bridge, plays less of a role as it will not show any \u201csharp edges\u201d on the photo in the dense fog either way. Whether a filter needs to be used depends on personal prefe\u00adrence and also on whether I can lower the ISO far enough to get the expo\u00adsure time I want.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Kirk\u00adju\u00adb\u00f8ur<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Kirk\u00adju\u00adb\u00f8ur in the south-west of Streymoy is also just a few minutes away from T\u00f3rshavn. Kirk\u00adju\u00adb\u00f8ur was once the spiri\u00adtual and cultural center of the Faroe Islands. With three special monu\u00adments, it is one of the country\u2019s main attractions.<\/p>

One of these is the ruins of Magnus Cathe\u00addral from around 1300, which was built or commis\u00adsioned by the bishop of the time. However, the Faroese refused to build it as they did not want to pay the high church dues. Accor\u00adding to some accounts, the bishop himself was murdered in the cathedral.<\/p>

The other sights are Olav\u2019s Church from the 13th century and the oldest preserved farm from the Viking Age on the Faroe Islands, the royal court of Kirk\u00adju\u00adb\u00f8ur. As you can see from my pictures, we still had fog, and a suitably mystical atmo\u00adsphere for pictures of this place.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We had planned to visit the outer west of the island of V\u00e1gar in the evening. The sky was still over\u00adcast, but towards evening the chances of the sun coming through increased and the chances of an evening glow were signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly higher. We set off in good time to visit a few small B\u2011spots on the way to our actual destination.<\/p>

The first spot was right next to S\u00f8rv\u00e1gs\u00advatn. These are small fishermen\u2019s cottages. They are located on the edge between the lake and the road and can be easily reached on the way from Mi\u00f0v\u00e1gur to the airport. They are small fishermen\u2019s houses with turf roofs and tradi\u00adtional stone walls, which can be used as a beau\u00adtiful foreground\/motif. The back\u00adground is formed by the Slave Rock or other hills in the area. You can park just a few meters away at a junc\u00adtion on the road, which is followed by a short dirt track parallel to the main road.<\/p>

A little further on towards the airport, where there is also a junc\u00adtion that is easy to miss, there is a rela\u00adtively new work of art \u2014 the mermaid in the shape of a horse. There is even a story about the statue, which is written on a sign on site. Photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally, a long expo\u00adsure is ideal here. I can recom\u00admend this spot when the sky is cloudy, before sunset in the evening or during the blue hour.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We continued past Sorvagur in the direc\u00adtion of B\u00f8ur, along the S\u00f8rv\u00e1gs\u00adfj\u00f8r\u00f0ur. There are more small but beau\u00adtiful B\u2011spots here. On the one hand, there are a few beau\u00adtiful little houses by the roadside, which can be photo\u00adgra\u00adphed very inte\u00adres\u00adt\u00adingly with the fjord walls oppo\u00adsite, or with Dran\u00adgarnir and Tind\u00adh\u00f3lmur in the background.<\/p>

There is also a beau\u00adtiful little house on the edge of the village in the small village of B\u00f8ur, which makes a lovely motif. You can park right next to it. There is also a great water\u00adfall through B\u00f8ur \u2014 for those who haven\u2019t seen enough water\u00adfalls yet.<\/p>

The road that leads further out to the end of V\u00e1gar is also nice to photo\u00adgraph. Just take a short break at the side of the road and enjoy the view back along S\u00f8rv\u00e1gsfj\u00f8r\u00f0ur.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The desti\u00adna\u00adtion of our evening photo tour was G\u00e1sa\u00addalur and the water\u00adfall called M\u00fala\u00adfo\u00adssur, which cascades into the sea. If you continue along the road, you reach the basin in which the village is located, after which you drive through a dark tunnel. In my opinion, it\u2019s well worth getting there a little earlier to visit a few of the view\u00adpoints in the village and enjoy the unique views. However, our desti\u00adna\u00adtion was the well-known A\u2011spot, which is on the way towards the sea and the old harbor.<\/p>

When we arrived, several other photo\u00adgraphers were already there. One Swede and a total of three Italians. They, too, were photo\u00adgra\u00adphing the scene that emerges from here when you look out over the M\u00fala\u00adfo\u00adssur, which flows directly into the sea. In the back\u00adground is the small village, the beau\u00adtiful basin and the impres\u00adsive moun\u00adtains that surround it. The scene is breath\u00adta\u00adking and beau\u00adtiful, which is probably why it has been photo\u00adgra\u00adphed so many times. But that doesn\u2019t stop me and many others from taking our own version of this scene.<\/p>

If you want some\u00adthing more indi\u00advi\u00addual, you can of course also take details. I find the water\u00adfall parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly beau\u00adtiful when there is no wind. It forms a straight column down\u00adwards, which can be \u201cfrozen\u201d with a very short expo\u00adsure time and forms a perfect round wreath when it hits the sea at the lower end. I tried to bridge the waiting time for the sunset by waiting for the perfect moment with a seagull or a puffin flying through. This proved to be extre\u00admely diffi\u00adcult, but was a way to immor\u00adta\u00adlize your own touch in a picture of this place. If you have strong winds at the loca\u00adtion, the water of the water\u00adfall some\u00adtimes flies back up. This also makes for special, more indi\u00advi\u00addual pictures of this place.<\/p>

Unfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adtely, the sun disap\u00adpeared behind clouds quite quickly when we arrived and didn\u2019t show itself again in the evening. We stood there for over 1.5 hours, but unfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adtely there was no real sunset. But the clouds still created a great atmo\u00adsphere. Espe\u00adci\u00adally when low passing clouds got stuck in the moun\u00adtains around G\u00e1sadalur.<\/p>

The next morning was the oppo\u00adsite of the previous day in terms of the weather. A blue sky surrounded us in all direc\u00adtions. Good for a hike to a view\u00adpoint, e.g. to the highest peak on the Faroe Islands: Sl\u00e6ttaratindur.<\/p>

On the way there, we passed the Risin og Kellingin view\u00adpoint again, so we stopped for another picture in beau\u00adtiful but less atmo\u00adspheric weather. Then we drove to the parking lot for hikers at the highest moun\u00adtain on the Faroe Islands.<\/p>

We had just over an hour of non-stop clim\u00adbing ahead of us along a well-trodden path and a slope full of small rocks, gravel and meadow. The first half is very steep and goes straight up towards the top of the moun\u00adtain. The terrain was always muddy, slip\u00adpery, scree and stones, gravel. The second half is some\u00adwhat flatter and leads more along the moun\u00adtain. However, the path becomes some\u00adwhat narrower. The last few meters to the lower view\u00adpoint are steep over rocks. There are several chains to hold on to, but they are not abso\u00adlutely neces\u00adsary. To reach the upper view\u00adpoint, you walk around the summit and climb a few more meters over rocks.<\/p>

The view is sensa\u00adtional and defi\u00adni\u00adtely worth the effort. You get a view of the north of the Faroe Islands with Risin og Kellingin and the island of Kalsoys or you can see as far south as Streymoy or even watch Fossa water\u00adfall, which looks almost tiny from up here. We were there around midday and saw that really beau\u00adtiful compo\u00adsi\u00adtions are possible on site. In the morning or evening sun, parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly beau\u00adtiful shots should be possible here. The weather fore\u00adcast for us on these days was morning or evening but without sun. The visi\u00adbi\u00adlity was also expected to be signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly worse that after\u00adnoon, namely rainy and foggy. That\u2019s why the visit was only an option at lunchtime. For comple\u00adteness: the descent takes about 45 minutes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I had already reported on the view\u00adpoint on Funningur and its fjord in the last part. As the view\u00adpoint was prac\u00adti\u00adcally on the way again, we wanted to try our luck again and stop there. But once again we were only half lucky. Once again, fog and clouds blocked our view. Although they were still hanging quite loosely in the fjord and not as thick as on our first attempt, they still spoiled the view of this impres\u00adsive scenery a little.<\/p>

The sun was shining at the top of the view\u00adpoint. We enjoyed the plea\u00adsant warmth and waited. At the bottom, the clouds were loosening from time to time but quickly closed in again. After a long wait, it became incre\u00adasingly over\u00adcast and we decided to move on. We had a few shots that were almost good, even if they were far from satisfactory.<\/p>

Our desti\u00adna\u00adtion for the afternoon\/evening was the north-east. The weather service had given us the hope that we would have the best visi\u00adbi\u00adlity and be the least exposed to the rain here.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We wanted to reach Vi\u00f0a\u00adrei\u00f0i before the cloud cover and fog comple\u00adtely enve\u00adloped us, but that wasn\u2019t quite enough, the far north was already thick. On the outward journey, there is actually a spot with lots of water\u00adfalls along the coast, which can be beau\u00adtifully photo\u00adgra\u00adphed with a drone. However, with a visi\u00adbi\u00adlity of 20m in places, this was not possible in our case.<\/p>

The village of Vi\u00f0a\u00adrei\u00f0i is also great thanks to the loca\u00adtion of the church. There is also the coast\u00adline, which is directly adja\u00adcent and very photo\u00adgenic in both direc\u00adtions. The house with the river in the fore\u00adground by the church is also a beau\u00adtiful motif. Great shots are possible here, even in this weather, even if there are no visible large moun\u00adtains surroun\u00adding the village.<\/p>

The weather we had was supposed to be ideal for the ghost town on Bor\u00f0oy, but when we got there, the weather was suddenly almost too good again. We would have liked it to be even foggier for the pictures to have a ghostly effect. However, we could see where the fog was hanging on the neigh\u00adboring island of Vi\u00f0oy. We struck up a conver\u00adsa\u00adtion with the local farmer\/sheep farmer and found out a bit about the place. He explained to us that the \u201cghost town\u201d is not really aban\u00addoned and is only referred to as such by the tourist board. He still looks after the houses, is actually on site every day and ever\u00ady\u00adthing is still habitable.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

So we had a look around and then drove back. On the way back, we saw two beau\u00adtiful, large and inte\u00adres\u00adting water\u00adfalls along the way, which we wanted to try and capture photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally. However, the shots proved to be diffi\u00adcult, due to the size and also the perspec\u00adtive proxi\u00admity, it was not easy to find special compositions.<\/p>

The first water\u00adfall had large rocks at the bottom, which were beau\u00adtifully washed by the water. However, I liked the overall shot rather mediocre. On the other hand, detailed shots of the last cascade were very nice.<\/p>

The second water\u00adfall was signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly larger and wider, but also less orga\u00adnized. For the best picture, in my opinion, I got back into the water and used the lower cascade as the fore\u00adground. As we were already in water\u00adfall mode, we decided to take a small detour via the Fossa water\u00adfall on the way back to our accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtion. The rain inten\u00adsi\u00adfied a little and the fog thic\u00adkened again. This should lead to some great atmo\u00adspheric pictures at the Fossa.<\/p>

Shoo\u00adting in the rain is gene\u00adrally chal\u00adlen\u00adging. The spray from the water\u00adfall is then joined by the drops from above. This means alter\u00adna\u00adting between wiping and photo\u00adgra\u00adphing. You also had to be careful not to slip on the wet rocks and paths.<\/p>

Photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally, the wide angle from below is possible at the Fossa. However, you can only see the first cascade, or very little of the second. From certain posi\u00adtions, shots with a slight tele\u00adphoto are also possible, for example, if someone were to stand at the top below the second cascade, this could also result in great pictures showing the scale of the water\u00adfall. However, the path to the top was very slip\u00adpery in the rain and would have been dange\u00adrous. So we didn\u2019t do that. Instead, I went up with the drone. But you have to be careful because of the power lines. It\u2019s also inte\u00adres\u00adting with a person in the picture, as the size of the water\u00adfall becomes appa\u00adrent. As you can see, many things are possible.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It remains the case that the Faroe Islands are a country that is incre\u00addibly photo\u00adgenic even in bad weather. So there is hardly any bad weather when you come here to take photos. The mystical and spooky moods in parti\u00adcular work perfectly in certain places. You don\u2019t always need a sunset or sunset. This increases the chances of success for a photo trip here. For view\u00adpoints, however, there should be less low cloud and fog than we often had. Simply so that you can also take nice pictures of the larger landscapes.<\/p>

The weather on the Faroe Islands remains exci\u00adting. Lots of rain, low-hanging clouds and thick fog make it diffi\u00adcult to photo\u00adgraph large land\u00adscapes on day 3+4 of our trip.
