Before I went to bed, I had a quick chat with my father, my travel compa\u00adnion. We\u2019re still going to Frank\u00adfurt as planned and will see what we can do on the spot. So we lie down again for a bit. Our train leaves at 4am. I sleep badly. In the night I receive an email from the airline. Instead of Frank\u00adfurt \u2014 Paris \u2014 V\u00e1gar (Faroe Islands), we fly at the same time to Amsterdam and from there via Eding\u00adburgh to V\u00e1gar. At least that\u2019s good. We don\u2019t arrive until late in the evening, but at least we get there. I roll over and try to get some more sleep.<\/p>

The alarm clock rings \u2014 it feels like just a few minutes later. I rewind my program. I say goodbye to my wife and slee\u00adping daughter and get into the car to drive to the station. Suddenly the thought occurred to me. My father doesn\u2019t have a pass\u00adport. He can\u2019t fly to Edin\u00adburgh. We spoke to the ground staff at the counter in Frank\u00adfurt. \u201cYou\u2019re right\u201d, was the ground staff\u2019s reply, \u201cbut that\u2019s your problem\u201d.<\/p>

That made my pulse race. \u201cNo, that\u2019s not our problem! We\u2019ve booked the flights so that we stay within the EU, so we only need an ID card. Your change came at such short notice. So it\u2019s their problem!\u201d. The ground staff wanted to make life easy for them\u00adselves and said: \u201cThen just fly tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>

But we didn\u2019t want to accept that and persisted. \u201cNo, we\u2019re flying today. We\u2019ve already paid for the train here, the rental car, the apart\u00adment for today and booked the flight today!Think of a way to get us to the Faroe Islands!\u201d.We went back and forth for a while until he actually came up with something.<\/p>

He rebooks us onto Lufthansa\/SAS. Our flight leaves for Hamburg in just under an hour, then via Koppen\u00adhagen to V\u00e1gar.Two chan\u00adgeover times of less than 30 minutes, but we\u2019ll be on the Faroe Islands earlier than planned.Will we make it?And what about our suitcases?<\/p>

But it went well, partly because the same plane that took us to Koppen\u00adhagen flew on to the Faroe Islands. We were lucky.And so we were able to set off on our first tour on the very first evening.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Saksun \u2014 idyll and seclusion<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A quick look at the weather maps. \u201cIf the weather is going to be good today, it should be in Saksun,\u201d I said to my father. Then we got into the car and set off. The drive to Saksun through the Saks\u00adu\u00adnard\u00adalur valley is an expe\u00adri\u00adence in itself. Which is why we stopped briefly for a few photos.<\/p>

Saksun is secluded on the west coast in the north of Streymoy \u2014 one of the main islands of the Faroe Islands. Saksun is surrounded by moun\u00adtains that are almost 800 meters high by Faroese stan\u00addards. A popular hiking trail, based on the paths of the ancient Faroese, leads from Saksun to Tjor\u00adnuvik. The village church, which imme\u00addia\u00adtely catches the eye, origi\u00adnally stood in Tjor\u00adnuvik and was brought here via the afore\u00admen\u00adtioned hiking trail.<\/p>

Anyone visi\u00adting the Faroe Islands should defi\u00adni\u00adtely pay a visit to Saksun. The sandy beach, which was washed up by a storm, is unique in the Faroe Islands. At low tide, it is even possible to walk through the fjord to the open sea.<\/p>

Of parti\u00adcular photo\u00adgra\u00adphic inte\u00adrest are the picturesque stone houses with their green grass roofs and the water\u00adfall that cascades down into the valley after rain. It is a parti\u00adcular chall\u00adenge to capture the peat houses of the historic farm and the water\u00adfall in one picture with a wide-angle lens. To do this, you have to stand in the water\u00adfall with your camera, so be careful as it can be very slippery!<\/p>

Photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally, the evening was extre\u00admely successful. The stress of the journey was almost forgotten. The Faroe Islands deli\u00advered what we had expected.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Faroe Islands and the stub\u00adborn weather<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It was my first time on the Faroe Islands. So I relied comple\u00adtely on the weather fore\u00adcast and it was so \u2026 well. During the trip, I checked the weather maps in the evenings and mornings and then decided more or less spon\u00adta\u00adneously where to go and planned the tours.<\/p>

But over the next few days, I realized that, in addi\u00adtion to suitable motifs and weather maps, you also need to have the pecu\u00adlia\u00adri\u00adties of the Faroe Islands on your radar. In the center and between the fjords, but also at higher alti\u00adtudes, low-hanging clouds were some\u00adtimes very persis\u00adtent. We had compa\u00adra\u00adtively few windy days. The saying wait 5 minutes if you don\u2019t like the weather didn\u2019t apply to our trip.<\/p>

The next morning was to bring the decision about our next day\u2019s tour. The fore\u00adcast was for rain and low clouds in the morning. However, they shouldn\u2019t be too low. There was also a bit more wind than the previous evening. It should clear up a bit across the whole island towards the afternoon.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The plan was made. Today it was going to be the north of the main island of Esturoy. The first spot on the way was the view of the largest water\u00adfall on the Faroe Islands: Fossa. Fossa itself is located on the island of Streymoy and is very easy to reach because it is right next to the road.<\/p>

Photos with a tele\u00adphoto lens are possible from here. If the wind direc\u00adtion is right, the water is whipped upwards again. Unfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adtely, even after waiting a while, this pheno\u00admenon did not occur this morning. Instead, the clouds lay on the plain above, which made for a beau\u00adtiful atmo\u00adsphere. I also waited for a car on the road so that the dimen\u00adsions would be clear in the picture.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We continued on to Ei\u00f0i. Where a soccer pitch was built close to the sea, almost directly between a lake and the waves of the sea. Today, the soccer pitch is only used as a camping site. If you walk along the coast, after a few minutes you reach a water\u00adfall and rocky coast with endless possi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties for foregrounds.<\/p>

The wind whipped rain and seawater into our faces, so micro\u00adfiber cloths were used for the first time. Sear\u00adching for compo\u00adsi\u00adtion, focu\u00adsing, clea\u00adning, taking photos. That\u2019s how it went for the next few minutes.<\/p>

The special chall\u00adenge on site was the use of filters. Within seconds, they were full of water splashes. So clea\u00adning was neces\u00adsary. Constantly. Keeping your eyes open was also incre\u00addibly stre\u00adnuous due to the wind.<\/p>

If you are also plan\u00adning to go here, be careful in wet condi\u00adtions. The ground is incre\u00addibly slip\u00adpery. A B\u2011motif from this point is a rock from \u201cRisin og Kellingin\u201d, which is visible from here. The view of Risin og Kellingin<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Once we were back in the car, it was time to warm up. But we didn\u2019t have much time for that, as there were only a few minutes\u2019 drive between us and a view\u00adpoint on Risin og Kellingin, which we headed for.<\/p>

This road to the view\u00adpoint is often closed in the winter months, but is easy to reach in the summer months. Risin og Kellingin, the name of the two rocks means \u201cthe giant and the woman\u201d. They are one of the most famous natural monu\u00adments on the Faroe Islands. Despite their impres\u00adsive heights of 71m and 69m, they seem quite small. This is mainly due to their loca\u00adtion in front of the cliffs, which are consider\u00adably higher at 352m. The view of Eidis\u00adkollur, the highest point of the cliffs, was not visible due to the low clouds. Nevert\u00adheless, some very atmo\u00adspheric pictures were taken.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Now, for the first time, the weather put a spanner in the works. As it cleared up much more slowly than the weather fore\u00adcast had predicted and visi\u00adbi\u00adlity got even worse, we were unable to go on our planned hike to Slaet\u00adta\u00adran\u00addidur, the highest moun\u00adtain on the Faroe Islands. We wouldn\u2019t have been able to see anything even from the summit. Another view\u00adpoint of the town of Funningur and the surroun\u00adding fjord land\u00adscape was not an option in the thick fog.<\/p>

So we drove on to Gj\u00f3gv, which lite\u00adrally means by the crevice. The fog that hung in the valleys and moun\u00adtains of North-Esturoy was not present here, and the rain was also gone. So we were able to enjoy Gj\u00f3gv a little. We were able to walk along the crevice that used to serve as a harbor. Even the Vikings are said to have used it.<\/p>

Inci\u00adden\u00adtally, the church in Gj\u00f3gv is the first church to be conse\u00adcrated in Faroese, in 1929. Before that, the inha\u00adbi\u00adtants of Gj\u00f3gv went to Funningur to worship.<\/p>

From a photo\u00adgra\u00adphic point of view, it is not easy to photo\u00adgraph the crevice and the loca\u00adtion at the same time. Even 16 mm is not really enough. The drone would be an option, but the wind was too strong when we were there. The second option is to take a panorama. But sections and details also make great pictures here in the village.<\/p>

However, I was a little disap\u00adpointed after this tour. Because the weather didn\u2019t play along as planned. Because we had a little extra time that day, we simply drove a little further to Elduv\u00edk.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Elduv\u00edk is a beau\u00adtiful little village with a great loca\u00adtion on a fjord that opens out to the sea. Here, too, there are typical Faroese houses and a church in the center of the village that can be photographed.<\/p>

The drive through the fjord land\u00adscapes to Elduv\u00edk is beau\u00adtiful from both sides. You should also not miss the route via Oyndarfj\u00f8r\u00f0ur.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

From Elduv\u00edk, we drove back to our apart\u00adment and made ourselves some\u00adthing to eat, as the plan for the evening wasn\u2019t quite clear yet. On the drive home, I was already thin\u00adking: Is the weather brin\u00adging me to my knees? Unsuc\u00adcessful on the Faroe Islands?<\/p>

I was not enti\u00adrely pleased with the weather fore\u00adcast for the evening. View\u00adfindr showed <10% chance of an evening glow, <50% chance of seeing it. Looking outside, the weather also seemed so discou\u00adra\u00adging. But staying at home is not an option. The land\u00adscape pictures are taken outside, so we decided to hike to B\u00f8sdal\u00ada\u00adfo\u00adssur tonight. It was the first hike that cost money, 200 DKK per person.<\/p>

For this price, you get a fanta\u00adstic view of the inland lake S\u00f8rv\u00e1gs\u00advatn and the slave rock Tr\u00e6lan\u00edpa. At the end of the short circular hike on the meadows, there is also a view of the B\u00f8dssdal\u00ada\u00adfo\u00adssur water\u00adfall, which plunges directly from the lake into the sea.<\/p>

The first view\u00adpoint alone is worth the effort of the hike. Tr\u00e6lan\u00edpa, the slave rock from which the Vikings threw the slaves they no longer needed, mostly Irish. The view from a height of 148m verti\u00adcally into the depths is impres\u00adsive. From the upper vantage point, then the ideal view of S\u00f8rv\u00e1gsvatn.<\/p>

We walk across the meadow and rocks along the cliff towards the water\u00adfall. There are no sign\u00adposts, the path ends where the sea begins. And then we sat there for an hour until sunset. No sun. Flat light. One or two tourists walked past us and probably asked them\u00adselves \u201cAre they going to sit here? What are they waiting for in this weather?\u201d<\/p>

But yes, as long as there is a chance of good light, of a sunset, of a special atmo\u00adsphere, we will stay put. Just as hope was almost begin\u00adning to fade, the sky suddenly exploded. What colors, what an intense sunset. For me, it was one of the most powerful sunsets in recent years.<\/p>

And it had to be quick. Compo\u00adsi\u00adtion, set pola\u00adriza\u00adtion, press shutter release, check, correct focus point or focus stacking. And all over again. I took what felt like hundreds of pictures within 30 minutes. The clouds changed quickly and it could have been over at any time. But the sunset lasted a long time.<\/p>

My ego was saved and the emotions were over\u00adflowing. What a bril\u00adliant evening. Finally hit the bull\u2019s eye again.<\/p>

And so we marched back to the starting point through the falling night. Full of anti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtion as to what the next few days would bring.<\/p>
