Maybe you know this situa\u00adtion. You\u2019ve been out and about, taken some photos and you\u2019ve managed to capture a lot. You come home full of euphoria, show the pictures to your friends and acquain\u00adtances or post them on Insta\u00adgram. But then you realize that hardly anyone shares your enthu\u00adsiasm about your pictures. After a few weeks or months, you are no longer as convinced as you were on the first day. Why is that?<\/p>

Even though it is now easier than ever to operate a camera and take a picture, it has not become any easier to reco\u00adgnize the most convin\u00adcing images among all the shots. On the contrary, the increased number of images made possible by digital tech\u00adno\u00adlogy actually makes this more diffi\u00adcult. The pile of digital files is growing imme\u00ada\u00adsur\u00adably and the number of good photos is dwind\u00adling in comparison.<\/p>

However, the ability to pick out the best pictures from a series of images is one of the key skills that sets photo\u00adgraphers apart from other photo\u00adgraphers. How can you learn this, what can you look out for, what are possible criteria? That\u2019s what this blog is about.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For many of us, choo\u00adsing our most compel\u00adling images is a diffi\u00adcult task that requires pati\u00adence, open-minded\u00adness and thought. Even the most expe\u00adri\u00adenced photo\u00adgraphers have to break down blocks that prevent them from seeing their photos clearly, because no two shots are the same.<\/p>

First things first. An evalua\u00adtion, an analysis or even the cura\u00adtion of a photo or photo\u00adgra\u00adphic work can never be one hundred percent objec\u00adtive. This is also the reason why a team of judges is always used in large photo compe\u00adti\u00adtions and normally never a single photo\u00adgrapher. But I will go into this in more detail later.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What levels of conside\u00adra\u00adtion are there, apart from the purely technical?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

There are several levels on which to view and evaluate a photo\u00adgraph. The purely tech\u00adnical. For example, is the subject in focus, does the depth of field or the expo\u00adsure time match the desired image effect or result. Here, a certain amount of blur\u00adring may well be desired by the photo\u00adgrapher. In land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy, however, we usually aim for sharp photos. Excep\u00adtions such as ICM photo\u00adgraphy or making move\u00adment or wind visible are of course excep\u00adtions. Also the crea\u00adtive play with depth of field. Begin\u00adners often concen\u00adtrate very strongly on these tech\u00adnical aspects in particular.<\/p>

More important than these purely tech\u00adnical aspects are the content aspects. At least for most viewers who did not take the photo them\u00adselves. In many compe\u00adti\u00adtions, tech\u00adni\u00adcally correct execu\u00adtion is the minimum requi\u00adre\u00adment for parti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtion and further conside\u00adra\u00adtion of the images by the jury. However, content-related aspects in compe\u00adti\u00adtions will gradu\u00adally bring you onto the short\u00adlist and possibly one or two selec\u00adtion rounds further.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Now, what are aspects of content and how can I analyze my photo\u00adgraphy in this respect?<\/p>

Terry Barrett, an American art critic who specia\u00adlizes in the analysis of photo\u00adgraphs, has summa\u00adrized this in a formula:<\/p>

Topic + design + medium + context = content<\/p>

I would like to briefly break down the 5 points for you.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Topic<\/strong><\/p>

First of all, we take a sober look at \u201cWhat is depicted, what can be seen?\u201d. This can be a main motif or several picture elements that are more or less connected to each other. The edges of the picture should also be considered, as well as the ques\u00adtion of \u201cWhat is not visible?\u201d or \u201cWhat may have been deli\u00adbera\u00adtely placed outside the frame of the photo?\u201d are ques\u00adtions that can be asked here.<\/p>

Design<\/strong><\/p>

When desig\u00adning, we look at the \u201cHow has the photo been executed or cons\u00adtructed?\u201d We can consciously look for compo\u00adsi\u00adtional picture elements. Are there patterns, diago\u00adnals, trian\u00adgles, leading lines and so on? Has the rule of thirds or the golden ratio been used? Where is the motif placed, where are other elements? Is there a classic layer struc\u00adture or has the fore\u00adground been deli\u00adbera\u00adtely omitted, for example? All of this can be rele\u00advant to the content of the photo.<\/p>

Medium<\/strong><\/p>

On the one hand, the medium can be the recor\u00adding medium, i.e. \u201cWhat means and methods were used?\u201d and on the other hand the presen\u00adta\u00adtion media, i.e. \u201cWhat are the photos displayed or executed with?\u201d. Which camera, lenses were possibly used, if this is known. Which focal length can usually be roughly esti\u00admated. Was it shot digi\u00adtally or on film? Where does the presen\u00adta\u00adtion take place \u2014 in a maga\u00adzine, illus\u00adtrated book, on a website, at a lecture on a projector, printed on artistic paper? In many compe\u00adti\u00adtions, the presen\u00adta\u00adtion medium is of course omitted, as a very specific data format, reso\u00adlu\u00adtion, etc. are usually prescribed.<\/p>

Just as an aside, I would like to mention that today, unfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adtely, images are often mainly presented and photo\u00adgra\u00adphed for Insta\u00adgram, where they have to adhere to a certain format and can usually only be seen on small screens on cell phones. This in turn requires diffe\u00adrent criteria from the photo\u00adgrapher when taking the picture. Whether this is good or bad is open to debate. But that\u2019s going too far at this point. I think you shouldn\u2019t let it influence your own photo\u00adgraphy too much.<\/p>

Context<\/strong><\/p>

We then look at the condi\u00adtions or circum\u00ads\u00adtances under which the photo was taken. Is there a story behind it? What was the photographer\u2019s inten\u00adtion? A photo\u00adgraph can also be shaped by influences of the photo\u00adgrapher that go beyond his inten\u00adtion and conscious atten\u00adtion. In other words, he was not even aware of it when he took and edited the picture.<\/p>

Minor White once said appro\u00adpria\u00adtely: \u201cPhoto\u00adgraphers often take better pictures than they realize.\u201d<\/p>

Contents<\/strong><\/p>

The points mentioned above now lead to the inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion of the content, i.e. \u201cWhat story does the photo tell?\u201d. When looking at the motif, design, medium and context of the photo, conclu\u00adsions are drawn about the content of the photo. The visual repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion can be expressed in words, so to speak. We often reco\u00adgnize the meaning of a photo intui\u00adtively. But if we take the time to analyze the photo, it will often give us more insight into the photo itself and what the photo or photo\u00adgrapher is trying to express. Lear\u00adning to analyze photos will ulti\u00adm\u00adately help us to take photos. Under\u00adstan\u00adding the visual language is just as important for crea\u00adting a photo as analy\u00adzing the finished photo.<\/p>

Not every photo contains complex content. Land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy in parti\u00adcular is rarely about very specific content. But we\u2019ll come to that in a moment.<\/p>

Edwart Weston, for example, main\u00adtained that an object can only be photo\u00adgra\u00adphed for its own sake. Minor White claimed that you could photo\u00adgraph an object for its own sake, but that you could also record and inter\u00adpret what else might be behind the object. And Alfred Stieg\u00adlitz believed that you could photo\u00adgraph an object with the inten\u00adtion of trig\u00adge\u00adring an emotional response.<\/p>

Regard\u00adless of what level of analysis the photo\u00adgrapher or viewer is aiming for, it is clear that deve\u00adlo\u00adping visual literacy will reward us with a richer expe\u00adri\u00adence when crea\u00adting and viewing photographs.<\/p>

This also makes it clear that the story that may be inter\u00adpreted in a photo is also shaped by the person looking at it. Subjec\u00adtive perspec\u00adtives, expe\u00adri\u00adences, one\u2019s own world view and values natu\u00adrally lead to diffe\u00adrent inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtions. And ther\u00ade\u00adfore also evoke diffe\u00adrent emotions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This brings us to a third point, in addi\u00adtion to the purely tech\u00adnical and content-related aspects, the emotional aspects. All of us, other\u00adwise we would probably not pursue this hobby, are largely moti\u00advated by a passion, so it is a parti\u00adcular chall\u00adenge to over\u00adcome our subjec\u00adti\u00advity to deter\u00admine which photos are the strongest.<\/p>

Espe\u00adci\u00adally in land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy, which is very much depen\u00addent on the seasons, times of day and weather, the content of the photo\u00adgraph is more a kind of reflec\u00adtion of the character or magic of a place in special light or special weather, coupled with the photographer\u2019s point of view. In land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy, we convey a mood rather than a specific state\u00adment. We ther\u00ade\u00adfore try to arouse the inte\u00adrest of the viewers of our photos even more on an emotional level.<\/p>

Of course, there are also fluid tran\u00adsi\u00adtions here and in land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy, there are also those who make docu\u00admen\u00adtary, aesthetic or distur\u00adbing state\u00adments with their photos, for example by depic\u00adting the changes in nature caused by human influences.<\/p>

By the way, emotions are purely subjec\u00adtive, but as already mentioned, I consider a purely objec\u00adtive view to be almost utopian. That\u2019s why diffe\u00adrent stan\u00addards will always be neces\u00adsary and applied for docu\u00admen\u00adtary or repor\u00adtage photo\u00adgraphy than for land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy. This is due to the diffe\u00adrences between the genres. A photo compe\u00adti\u00adtion that does not sepa\u00adrate such genres from one another is dubious in my eyes. Pictures from diffe\u00adrent genres cannot, or at least can hardly, be compared with each other.<\/p>

In order to be able to look at our own photos more objec\u00adtively, we must at least try to detach ourselves from the emotions that are undoub\u00adtedly burned into our natural hard disk up here. That alone is diffi\u00adcult. That\u2019s why we try to analyze our own pictures accor\u00adding to certain criteria. But even with the help of these, indi\u00advi\u00addual prefe\u00adrences and aesthetic prefe\u00adrences remain. Always be aware of this, even if you comment on or \u201crate\u201d other people\u2019s pictures on social media.<\/p>

The easiest are what I call the \u201chard criteria\u201d. Image compo\u00adsi\u00adtion, expo\u00adsure, sharp\u00adness, perspec\u00adtive, etc. These points can still be assessed quite simply on the basis of the facts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Image compo\u00adsi\u00adtion<\/strong><\/p>

Try to be clear about the arran\u00adge\u00adment of the elements in the picture if you have not already done so when taking the picture. Are they in visual balance? Do you see patterns, lines or similar? Where is the viewer\u2019s gaze directed?<\/p>

Expo\u00adsure<\/strong><\/p>

Was the expo\u00adsure correct? Are there any burnt-out areas or areas that are too dark and can no longer be saved? Anything you can still capture with post-proces\u00adsing should be okay for now.<\/p>

Sharp\u00adness and focus<\/strong><\/p>

The subject must be sharp and in focus in all cases. Depen\u00adding on the image compo\u00adsi\u00adtion, check the sharp\u00adness from the front to the back of the image. Images with blur\u00adring and unin\u00adten\u00adtional out of focus can be discarded immediately.<\/p>

Farben und Kontraste<\/strong><\/p>

Wo sind die st\u00e4rksten Kontraste im Bild? Wo der hellst, wo der dunkelste Fleck? Hat dies Einfluss auf den Betrach\u00adtungs\u00adfluss? Der Mensch schaut unwei\u00adger\u00adlich zu den hellsten Flecken, oder denen mit den gr\u00f6\u00dften Kontrasten. Nutzt das, um den Blick zu lenken. Welche Farben sind vorhanden? Wie stehen sie in Bezie\u00adhung? Komple\u00adment\u00e4r, Mono\u00adtonal, etc.<\/p>

Perspec\u00adtive<\/strong><\/p>

Hat die H\u00f6he, Neigung, der Kamera gepasst? Auch die Brenn\u00adweite? Allein mit diesen 3 Para\u00adme\u00adtern kannst du so viele unter\u00adschied\u00adliche Bilder aufnehmen. Wenn du hiermit expe\u00adri\u00admen\u00adtierst und sp\u00e4ter am Bild\u00adschirm analy\u00adsierst, kannst du viel Lernen. W\u00e4hlt von einem Motiv oder Szene nur das eine Bild, in der euch die Perspek\u00adtive am besten gepasst hat.<\/p>

Unique\u00adness and originality<\/strong><\/p>

Ich denke das ist immer ein Ziel f\u00fcr Foto\u00adgrafen, den eigenen Stil und die eigene krea\u00adtive Note in Bilder einzu\u00adbringen. Wir alle wollen einzig\u00adar\u00adtige Land\u00adschaften und seltene Momente fest\u00adzu\u00adhalten. Gerade bei ganz bekannten Loca\u00adtions gibt es h\u00e4ufig die eine Kompo\u00adsi\u00adtion, f\u00fcr die sie bekannt ist, aber wenn ihr das Bild gemacht habt, versucht auch euer eigenes Ding. Versucht eure Krea\u00adti\u00advit\u00e4t heraus\u00adzu\u00adfor\u00addern. Bewertet zu Hause in Ruhe ob euer Shot nicht viel\u00adleicht sogar mehr euer Tun oder euren Stil wider\u00adspie\u00adgelt. Wenn eine Aufnahme dabei ist, die nicht den Stan\u00addard-Shot zeigt, sondern das Motiv auf eure eigenen beson\u00addere Art und Weise zeigt, dann w\u00e4hlt die aus und \u00fcber\u00adrascht die Betrachter.<\/p>

Image state\u00adment<\/strong><\/p>

Ask yourself what message or emotion you want to or will convey with your picture. As already mentioned, a strong image state\u00adment or conveyed emotion can arouse the viewer\u2019s inte\u00adrest. As an exer\u00adcise: google diffe\u00adrent emotions and feelings and create them as a keyword list in Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom. Then try to tag your images with at least one emotion each. Inten\u00adtion<\/strong><\/p>

You should always go photo\u00adgra\u00adphing with a certain inten\u00adtion or certain motives and be clear about these yourself.<\/p>

When photo\u00adgra\u00adphing, it is important to have a certain under\u00adstan\u00adding of what you are looking at, what your goal is, why you want to photo\u00adgraph this or that. You can change this inten\u00adtion if neces\u00adsary. If an idea doesn\u2019t work at the time of photo\u00adgra\u00adphing, then you can and should change it.<\/p>

How often do I set off with an idea or a target photo in mind and end up doing some\u00adthing comple\u00adtely diffe\u00adrent, or come home with comple\u00adtely diffe\u00adrent results to what I had hoped for, because it was a better fit? You should under\u00adstand that this is comple\u00adtely fine.<\/p>

Nach Wochen oder Monaten dann, nach dem die nega\u00adtiven Emotionen keine Rolle mehr spielten wieder\u00adent\u00addeckt, bear\u00adbeitet und Ergeb\u00adnisse erhalten, die nicht selten auch im Port\u00adfolio landeten.<\/p>

Things don\u2019t always go accor\u00adding to plan. But if you get involved while you\u2019re taking the photos, you\u2019ll end up looking at them from a slightly diffe\u00adrent perspec\u00adtive when you get home. Photo\u00adgraphy is a process and in order to stay true to this process, you have to trust that the wind will some\u00adtimes guide you.<\/p>

When you\u2019re back home from a photo tour and you look at the pictures you\u2019ve taken, you first have to find your pictures and let them tell you what you\u2019ve seen.<\/p>

    Edit the selected images to opti\u00admize colors, contrasts and other aspects. But don\u2019t overdo it with filters or effects to preserve the authen\u00adti\u00adcity of the landscape.<\/li>

    Think about the best way to present your pictures. This could be in the form of a photo book series, an exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion, a digital gallery or on your own website.
