Have you ever expe\u00adri\u00adenced this? Set out to take a long expo\u00adsure. Tripod set up, camera posi\u00adtioned. Settings checked. Calcu\u00adlated the expo\u00adsure time for the ND filter, then looked in the camera bag. Empty. Damn, I forgot the filter set. It\u2019s lying on the desk at home, still from the last clea\u00adning. Now what?<\/p>

In order to achieve a very long expo\u00adsure of several seconds during the day, it is neces\u00adsary to attach an ND filter to the lens. This reduces the inci\u00addent light and thus extends the neces\u00adsary expo\u00adsure time to expose the image in a balanced way. If we don\u2019t have an ND filter to hand, we\u2019re out of luck. <\/p>

No! Not at all! Modern image proces\u00adsing allows us to take a diffe\u00adrent approach here too. If we achieve an expo\u00adsure time of 0.4 seconds with a fairly wide aper\u00adture and low ISO, then we only need 10 shots and we have already exposed for 4 seconds.<\/p>

The proce\u00addure<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On loca\u00adtion, try to increase the expo\u00adsure time as much as possible. Lowest ISO, smal\u00adlest aper\u00adture that can still be tole\u00adrated and then conti\u00adnuous shoo\u00adting. Try to esti\u00admate what expo\u00adsure time you would like and how many shots are neces\u00adsary with the expo\u00adsure time you have. Then hammer them into the box. <\/p>

At home, match the images as closely as possible or synchro\u00adnise the settings in Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom or Came\u00adraRaw so that they all look the same when you first look at them. <\/p>

Of course, the indi\u00advi\u00addual images have diffe\u00adrent struc\u00adtures, etc. for all moving elements. However, ever\u00ady\u00adthing that is fixed (e.g. buil\u00addings) should be iden\u00adtical in every image. <\/p>

Now load all the images as layers in Photo\u00adshop. From Ligh\u00adt\u00adroom, select the images in the library, right-click, Edit in\u2026, Open as layers in Photoshop.<\/p>

In Photo\u00adshop, select all layers and go to Edit, Auto-align layers and let Photo\u00adshop auto\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcally align the layers on top of each other.<\/p>

Then select the layers again (if they are no longer selected), right-click on the layers and select Convert to smart object. All layers in this smart object will now disappear. <\/p>

Finally, navi\u00adgate via the menu to Layer, Smart objects, Stack mode and select Median or Mean value. Whichever gives the best result. You have now combined the indi\u00advi\u00addual short expo\u00adsure times into one long expo\u00adsure time. <\/p>

Depen\u00adding on your prefe\u00adrence, you can then perfect the final touches in Photo\u00adshop or back in Lightroom. <\/p>

Both tech\u00adni\u00adques lead to a good result. I like my ND filters because I can see the result in advance. However, if you already have some expe\u00adri\u00adence and you want to save yourself the weight or money for ND filters, or you have forgotten the filters at home, then you can try this trick. <\/p>
