As a hobby land\u00adscape photo\u00adgrapher, it\u2019s not easy when it comes to holi\u00addays. We would like to spend much more time travel\u00adling or pursuing our passion for nature photo\u00adgraphy on holiday. On the one hand, we usually have a main job and only have a limited number of holiday days available, or the family would like to travel to comple\u00adtely diffe\u00adrent desti\u00adna\u00adtions than we have planned for photography.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

But holi\u00addays are also leisure time and hobbies are some\u00adthing you do in your spare time, so it\u2019s legi\u00adti\u00admate to want to go photo\u00adgraphy, isn\u2019t it? I think so. To help you out with this mess, and to save you from a family quarrel, I\u2019ve put toge\u00adther some tips on how you can combine a holiday and the hobby of land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy without the family having to cut back and maybe still get some port\u00adfolio-ready pictures.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

You want to be a land\u00adscape photo\u00adgrapher in the moun\u00adtains, but your family wants to go to the beach? Time for a compro\u00admise. Pick an area where the moun\u00adtains and the sea are not far apart, so that you can maybe go to the moun\u00adtains or at least to some inte\u00adres\u00adting hills quite quickly for photo excur\u00adsions and lie on the beach with your family during the day. For example, maybe Mallorca, Madeira, Azores, Sardinia and so on.\u2026<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Also, beau\u00adtiful scenery can be found on the beach, so keep an open mind. Go with the family\u2019s wishes, but try to help deter\u00admine the desti\u00adna\u00adtion so there\u2019s some\u00adthing for ever\u00adyone. And don\u2019t be disap\u00adpointed if your family doesn\u2019t really want to go to the High\u00adlands of Iceland.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

One thing should be clear to you from the start. The time of day when the light is not ideal for land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy belongs to the family without excep\u00adtion. It is almost impos\u00adsible to take a land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraph worthy of a port\u00adfolio during this time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

At most, take a small set with you for family pictures or repor\u00adtage, that\u2019s it. Other\u00adwise, take care of your family and enjoy your time toge\u00adther with them. That has to be your conces\u00adsion, but hopefully it shouldn\u2019t be too diffi\u00adcult for you in general.
As \u201chorse-trading\u201d, you nego\u00adtiate that you can still take your full set with you on holiday. So tripod, filters, lenses, camera, whatever you need.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If you are driving your own car, this should gene\u00adrally not be a problem. If you are flying far away, think carefully in advance about what you really need and, if neces\u00adsary, book a sepa\u00adrate piece of hand luggage for the flight. Under no circum\u00ads\u00adtances do cameras and lenses belong in your suit\u00adcase! Who knows when and where it will arrive.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

3. prepare twice as inten\u00adsi\u00advely for the holiday<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Scout out the loca\u00adtions at the holiday desti\u00adna\u00adtion online in advance. Do this via photo plat\u00adforms, hash\u00adtags, Google, and anything else you can think of. Save these loca\u00adtions so that you also have access to them on holiday. Maybe you can find out in advance at what time of day or in what weather the loca\u00adtions are most photo\u00adgenic. Make a note of ever\u00ady\u00adthing. Look for as many photo spots as you can find.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

But be aware that you can\u2019t and won\u2019t take all the pictures you set your mind to. Every holiday is too short for that, for sure.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It is also important to be prepared for excur\u00adsions with the family, in addi\u00adtion to your rese\u00adarch work for your desti\u00adna\u00adtion photos. Be well informed and try to know what is available locally in the region that is suitable for the family. Espe\u00adci\u00adally if your family is more active. Look for inte\u00adres\u00adting places, view\u00adpoints, offers for children and so on. If you have some\u00adthing up your sleeve at all times for both your family and your photo\u00adgraphy, you will be the boss or the lady of the situa\u00adtion at all times.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

For us, plan\u00adning a holiday usually goes like this: My wife wants to go to a certain country. If it really doesn\u2019t offer anything photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally, which is not very often the case, I suggest a similar area or country. We usually agree on some\u00adthing that we think will make a nice family holiday, because that\u2019s the main point. On the side, I make sure that I still find some\u00adthing to photo\u00adgraph locally.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Since my wife more or less dictates the desti\u00adna\u00adtion, I specify the region, that\u2019s the compro\u00admise. So I quickly rese\u00adarch where the land\u00adscape is impres\u00adsive or where I hope to find photo loca\u00adtions. For an over\u00adview, travel blogs or websites of other nature and land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphers are often enough. Google helps to find the right sites.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

But as a compro\u00admise, I also make sure that there is ever\u00ady\u00adthing the family imagines, if possible. Like a beach nearby, to stay with this example. Some\u00adtimes it becomes a road-trip-light, with diffe\u00adrent accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtions, but 2\u20133 nights per accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtion, when we realise that there is a lot to discover and it doesn\u2019t make sense to always start from one place.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Again, my wife gets to choose the accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtion. Of course, we both always have a veto on every decision, at any time, but that way we still get to our final travel plans quickly and effi\u00adci\u00adently. It has to be said, however, that neither of us is that picky about where we stay.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

5. use local family time and trips to scout locations <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If we are then on holiday locally, the day is usually spent not only by the pool or on the beach. We are quite active and want to see and expe\u00adri\u00adence a lot. During the day, there might be some\u00adthing that is photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally exci\u00adting for you and enter\u00adtai\u00adning for the family at the same time. If the family is happy, you might have a few minutes for photo\u00adgraphy. Other\u00adwise, as I said, don\u2019t use these daytime excur\u00adsions for photo\u00adgraphy, but for getting to know the loca\u00adtions and scou\u00adting with your eyes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Is there anything inte\u00adres\u00adting to photo\u00adgraph here, a special motif, special fore\u00adgrounds or details? Is this spot more suitable for sunrise, i.e. in the morning, or for sunset, i.e. in the evening? Also look for spots as close as possible to your accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtion. You can then visit these spon\u00adta\u00adneously and at rela\u00adtively short notice, should photo\u00adgra\u00adphic weather and great light arise.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

In my eyes, the ideal time for land\u00adscape photo\u00adgraphy is often in the morning. It\u2019s the same on holiday. The whole world is still asleep and you have the spots to yourself. Your family will also want to sleep in on holiday, so that\u2019s your advan\u00adtage. In summer, use the time until the family is awake for your photo excursions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It\u2019s diffe\u00adrent if you want to go to a sunset spot, for example. On holiday, your children may be awake a little longer than in ever\u00adyday life. Your wife also doesn\u2019t want to be left alone in the evening. After all, you are on holiday toge\u00adther. So think of some\u00adthing. Prepare a small \u201cevent\u201d, for example a picnic at the loca\u00adtion and enjoy the sunset toge\u00adther and take a few pictures along the way or let your camera take a timel\u00adapse of the sunset while you toast the beau\u00adtiful holiday with your wife in your arms.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If you have lost a lot of sleep due to your photo excur\u00adsions, you may have the oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to take a short siesta on the beach at midday, other\u00adwise you should defi\u00adni\u00adtely consider the next point.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Remember, you are on holiday. Don\u2019t go out every day. That can cause resent\u00adment, and your holiday is there so that you can recover. Physi\u00adcally and mentally. If the time is right and the weather is good, then set off with deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion and don\u2019t try to find some\u00adthing to photo\u00adgraph. That never works.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

So be well prepared. You probably have more spots than you can go to. That\u2019s normal and shouldn\u2019t dampen your spirits.
