When are the best conditions?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Simply put, this is when the wild garlic is in bloom! This period is usually quite short and lasts only a few days, up to maybe 2, maximum 3 weeks. Depen\u00adding on the region, you should observe the wild garlic flowe\u00adring from the end of April to the middle or end of May so that you don\u2019t miss it. If the first buds already look like the one in the next picture, then you should take the oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to go into the forest in the next few days to photo\u00adgraph flowe\u00adring wild garlic.<\/p>

When the flowe\u00adring is in full swing, you should take every oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity, even if local condi\u00adtions may not be perfect. Waiting for thick fog in spring can work, but it can also lead to a missed oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity. Usually a damp morning in the forest, light rain or morning sun is also enough to take great pictures.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Where can I find wild garlic?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It\u2019s best to scout a few loca\u00adtions in advance. In March you can reco\u00adg\u00adnise wild garlic by its garlic scent and the typical, elon\u00adgated green leaves. Wild garlic also often occurs in large colo\u00adnies, which is why you don\u2019t have to look for small patches. To narrow down the choice of forests where you can look for wild garlic, you can do some rese\u00adarch online. <\/p>

Search Google Maps\/Earth for dense deci\u00adduous forests. Look at the topo\u00adgraphy of the forests. If there are small valleys, gorges or depres\u00adsions with small streams or ripa\u00adrian forests of rivers within these shady deci\u00adduous forests, there is a high proba\u00adbi\u00adlity of finding wild garlic there. Wild garlic grows up to an alti\u00adtude of 1900 metres above sea level and throug\u00adhout Europe, except in the Medi\u00adter\u00adra\u00adnean region. It is also some\u00adwhat more wide\u00adspread in southern Germany than in nort\u00adhern Germany. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What do I have to bear in mind when photo\u00adgra\u00adphing wild garlic?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

A very important concern for me is to point out to you that when photo\u00adgra\u00adphing wild garlic you should take care not to trample it. Wild garlic often grows in nature reserves. Leaving the path should ther\u00ade\u00adfore be a no-go for you either way. In nort\u00adhern Germany, wild garlic is even on the red list in many regions, so you should be careful. Also when coll\u00adec\u00adting the leaves for your own consump\u00adtion. Unfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adtely, I keep finding carefully selected photo spots where the wild garlic has been trampled down by people. <\/p>

In any case, you can live your life to the full when taking photos. The wild garlic blos\u00adsoms are already great photo motifs in them\u00adselves. In the mass as a bloo\u00adming, white sea of blos\u00adsoms in the fresh green spring forest, they are simply enchan\u00adting. So feel free to use whatever focal lengths you have available. Get close to the blos\u00adsoms with the wide-angle lens. Use focus stacking if neces\u00adsary. Use the tele\u00adphoto for detail shots, etc. Be as crea\u00adtive as you can! And be sure to use a circular pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter to bring the green of the leaves to life, espe\u00adci\u00adally when it is still damp in the forest.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Photo\u00adtech\u00adnical difficulties<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In addi\u00adtion to the focus point and the desired sharp\u00adness in the picture, also keep an eye on your histo\u00adgram. And be sure to check the result after taking the photo. In an other\u00adwise very dark forest, the white wild garlic flowers can quickly be over\u00adex\u00adposed, depen\u00adding on the light situa\u00adtion or the amount of white in bloom. Remember that your camera always aims for a medium expo\u00adsure. Some\u00adtimes it can ther\u00ade\u00adfore be useful to use the expo\u00adsure compen\u00adsa\u00adtion in order to have optimal image data later on the computer. <\/p>

Also remember to use your camera\u2019s expo\u00adsure bracke\u00adting when backlit or, depen\u00adding on the compo\u00adsi\u00adtion, focal length and aper\u00adture, focus stacking. In the vlog (see below) to this blog post you can see how I use these tech\u00adni\u00adques in the field. Please note that for these tech\u00adni\u00adques it should be as wind\u00adless as possible in the forest. Other\u00adwise, this can lead to arte\u00adfacts that you only notice when editing the image and that are very diffi\u00adcult to remove. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
