How to take mini\u00adma\u00adlist forest photos<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMini\u00adma\u00adlist forest shots are anything but boring. They can exude an incre\u00addible sense of calm and rela\u00adxa\u00adtion, but still offer plenty to discover. But how do you manage to capture such images with a photo\u00adgraph? Do the bare forests of late winter lend them\u00adselves to this? In this blog post, I\u2019ll get to the bottom of these ques\u00adtions and give you some helpful tips on how you too can take great mini\u00adma\u00adlist forest photos. <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Late winter, or even early spring, is often parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly dreary and rarely invites photo excur\u00adsions into nature in our lati\u00adtudes. Yet it is precisely this drea\u00adri\u00adness that can make for beau\u00adtiful mini\u00adma\u00adlist shots in the forest, I thought to myself as I drove into a nearby beech forest this morning in a plea\u00adsantly thick fog. You can see how I took the pictures for this blog post in the video at the end of the post.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What should you pay atten\u00adtion to?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The choice of loca\u00adtion is parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly important for this type of forest photo\u00adgraphy. To create mini\u00adma\u00adlist shots, a beech forest should be parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly well suited. I find the dark, straight, elon\u00adgated trunks of the beech trees ideal. But I\u2019m sure other forest scenes will also come into question.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Reduce the scene as much as possible, but make sure you don\u2019t photo\u00adgraph the subject alone. Without context, the best motif can simply look boring. A curved tree only looks special if there are many trees with straight growth around it. Or pay atten\u00adtion to whether two or more trees are in propor\u00adtion to each other. Of course, a context can also be empty space if a tree is parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly free-standing.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If you are not sure whether more or less makes sense in the scene, take several shots. If neces\u00adsary, you can always crop the image in image editing. Don\u2019t be afraid to take out more than usual. However, as soon as the image becomes unclear, you have probably cropped too much.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For mini\u00adma\u00adlist shots, forget the wide-angle lens. It will probably pack far too much of the scene onto the sensor. A mini\u00adma\u00adlist shot is much easier with a tele\u00adphoto focal length.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Helpful weather conditions<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Certain weather condi\u00adtions help to create such mini\u00adma\u00adlist shots, of course. Ideal condi\u00adtions should be a really nice dense fog. But haze or rain can also help to reduce a scene. Such weather condi\u00adtions also create a very special mood in the image in addi\u00adtion to the reduced detail of the scene.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Of course, you can also create mini\u00adma\u00adlist photo\u00adgraphs in any other season. Even in less than ideal condi\u00adtions. Make sure that you get strong contrasts. Back\u00adlight situa\u00adtions can turn trees into silhou\u00adettes that are reduced enti\u00adrely to their shape. Or try to reduce the colours in the picture. This is not much of a problem in a summer forest, for example.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If it is humid, then defi\u00adni\u00adtely test the use of a pola\u00adri\u00adsing filter. It helps to reduce the shine on leaves and makes the colours shine.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Another way of redu\u00adcing details to make an image more mini\u00adma\u00adli\u00adstic is to use other tech\u00adni\u00adques, such as ICM (Inten\u00adtional Camera Move\u00adment). This involves deli\u00adbera\u00adtely moving the camera during the expo\u00adsure time. This requires some prac\u00adtice and produces many images, only a few of which are used. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
